View Full Version : Feet hurting when standing on inlines *youch!*

Long time no see everyone. Now that summer is finally nearing, I am trying to finally learn how to inline skate after owning my inlines for so long. They're Rollerblade Crossfire TFS. On Sunday I finally learned how to stand on the skates without falling backwards right away and was actually balancing pretty well! The only thing that was keeping me from practicing even longer was the pain in my feet! I don't believe it's the skates themselves. I THINK it maybe because I'm trying so hard to balance and my feet are just not use to it. I believe this to be so because I'm getting the same pain I use to get when standing on the balancing ball at the gym.
Is this normal for a complete newbie? I'm just hoping it goes away soon. At first both of my feet were in pain but then only the right one was in pain. Maybe it'll go away the longer I stand in them? The pain also disappears when I start to duck walk (semi-skate). Heh.

Yes I think you are correct.
Your feet are getting used to working inside your skate boot.
Again, RePost in the Begineers Sub-Forum and you might get more action and more posts than mine that will enlighten you.

Well, you're quite right - the pain is caused or at least influenced by your trouble balancing. It will cost you a lot of power in the forefoot, wich tendons obviously go through your foot and ankle.
When you also tend to fall backwards, you probably stand up too straight. Try to bend your knees a lot - it will make you more stable. And relax! oh and smile too.... :D

My feet hurt too and I have done this awhile. I would first ask where your feet hurt? If you are like me it is in the arch and heel. This is due to most skates being made for people with arches so if you don't have an arch then it causes pain. I have to add insoles to shim my heels higher and relieve the pressure. I have also found that if I over thighten my skates I won't get very far without a lot of pain.
Frame placement can be a big issue. I set mine by loosening the frames just enough to move them with some force. I then stand on one skate in the house where I have something to hold onto and keep adjusting the frame until it feels like the most pressure on the bottom of my foot is directly centered. (you don't need to stand like a stork, just shift your weight onto the skate you are adjusting)
Lastly, if I stand too straight upright my heels will get to hurting bad. This tells me to shift my weight forward and push more with the balls of my foot and the pain goes away. (this happens if I am climbing hills or on very course pavement)

Hi Indiana-Greenetuckian, and Chicago-Jibberish18,,
Due to a foot problem that I created years ago shovelling a trench with loose sneaks, I have gotten into Podiatrist Orthotics that I wear all the time.
I do not have any of the problems either of you mentioned in any skate because my orthotics take care of the arch problem and much more in terms of how my foot is positioned.
Just a suggestion, and if your health plans permit the cost isn't bad for the payback in better performance.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to tell her and she was getting all pissed at me for not doing it her way! In the end I was standing a bit straight but I was leaning forward. It worked out pretty well. I found, bending my knees hurts my lower back. I can't stand foot AND back pain at the same time. LOL. I did bend my knees when I was using the brake though!

My feet hurt too and I have done this awhile. I would first ask where your feet hurt? If you are like me it is in the arch and heel.It's actually the outer edges of my feet (opposite the arch). This is what led me to believe it was just my feet trying to balance and in turn my muscles felt the pressure. I knew instantly that I had felt that pain before and I remembered it was at the gym on the balancing ball.
My girlfriends arch does hurt though, ever since she washed the boot in her inlines. I might buy her a couple of soles to try out from Inline Warehouse. Thank you for the suggestions everyone. I soak up this stuff like a sponge.
