Hi everyone,

Im new to this forum- havent actually been out on my skates since about 1999, but a little discovery in the loft has got my blood pumping again. Also, it's great to see such a body of Quad skaters- keeping the sport alive.

Back in around 1995 I headed down to Allsports for a pair of Bauer Turbos, i'd wanted them for so long after spending a few years on some Roces. For some reason, I bought some Bauer FX3 QUADS instead, I skated on them for years and loved them, originally they had a set of two-tone Sims wheels. People used to stop me at rinks to have a chat about these skates that seemingly nobody had ever seen before, and on many occasions I was going to swap the for a pair of Turbos but whenever I skated in my best mates Turbos', the FX just felt better.

Anyway (Im rambling).. I pulled them out of the loft the otherday, along with the old Roces Ventronic Quads, and only 4 Krypto Impulse wheels (Pink).

Over the next few weeks I will be restoring them to former glory, and seeing if I can still skate! If anybody is interested I'll keep you posted.

I must stress that these boots are factory built and not converted but I googled and searched forums for information on these boots but there is no documentation or even a picture of them anywhere. Have you seen a pair before?

Many thanks

Sam

Is it just the plate that's different? The boot itself looks the same as a Turbo from what I can see in the pics ...

Need a subforum for hardshell skaters or something, lol.

Hi there,

I think you are right, the plates are different- also the trucks are re-enforced plastic as opposed to the metal one's on the turbos. As I looked round the forum after posting this message I realised that this probably isn't the place to be for hardshell skaters! Were they all left in the 80's!

By the way- are you in Sheffield, Yorkshire? Im just in between Rotherham and Sheff! Any good places around here to skate, outside?

Cheers.

Sam

I have about 5 sets of old hardshell skates kicking around, some of them have plastic trucks, but they're black and the same shape as the metal ones, so nothing like yours! I've never seen that shape plate before either, just the round Playmakers and the skinny Ventro ones, so I can't really be much help on that score.

There seems to be a lot of dedicated hardshell skaters in the South East (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PVNn25rmVI), we've had a few former speed skaters come out of the woodwork in Sheffield with an eye on starting Roller Derby - most of them pull their Bauers out of a closet before switching over to regular speed skates, lol

Anywho, good places to skate outdoors is tricky, if you're in Catcliffe there's the old airport road. In Sheffield itself there's a few good parks - Millhouses, Endcliffe (and the next park above it) and some others I can't remember off the top of my head (I'm terrible with names for places, only been here 18 months )

When it's wet on a Thursday I can usually be found in Skate Central from 6 - 8pm, drop me a message if you wanna come down and get back into the swing of things (it's a dive, the music is terrible, but it's all we've got for public indoor skating right now ...)

Thanks for all the information, I'm just awaiting some new bearings and a set of sims snakes, can't wait to start skating again- I'll
be sure to check out these places once I've had a good practice. I really hope I'm half decent still.

I'll post a little pic once the wheels arrive, and once again thanks for taking the time to reply, I really do appriciate it.

Sam.

Ps. If anybody wants to buy 4 krypto impulse wheels (early 90s) let me know, very bright pink, not too sure they make this color anymore. Can post pictures. Thanks

Cheers

Sam.

Those are a strange skate to me too!

Looks like an FX-3 (in-line) shell but wit the Turbo cuff mounted - as for the plates, I have no clue on those myself - the better fit over a turbo is likely down to a wider foot-bed if I'm any judge (Turbo's are renowned for having a narrow foot-bed).

You will find there are a few of us "old-skool" Brit skaters lurking on here though, I still have my Bauer Turbo's that I bought in 1986 although I did upgrade to a new pair of skates last year (the converted RX-05's you can see in my avatar).

I'm in Lincolnshire myself but usually skate indoors at Wigan Roller Rink - I'm tempted to go to the new sessions they started running at a sports centre near me though.

Hi Samseptember,
I see a lot of people in London skating on Bauers and there's quite a demand for them on auctions via ebay.
I couldn't afford the Bauers when I had my first job so I purchased a pair of Roces instead but although I've only done a custom build and will be purchasing a pair of Sure Grip Rebel Invaders in the near future the only part that is left from my Roces are the boots and there in the shed
Wouldn't go back to above the ankle type footware as I've always found them restricting, Also remember seeing one or two of these but the reason it's so difficult to find info was because they were so many custom builds for Bauers once the more experienced skaters caught on and adapted them to their needs.
There's a chap in London who specialises in these type, the website is 'www.quad-skates.co.uk'
Really friendly chap and that's where I got info parts etc...

Regards,
Carly

Hi everybody,

sorry about the delay, great to see some 'old skool' skaters having a chat about the good old days. Finally put some (white) Sims street snakes on my quads, and new Abec 9's. Took them down to an old racetrack and had a fly round. Pretty much still got it after 10 years and had some great fun. I kept asking myself why I had ever stopped skating in the first place. The 'new' Sims didn't feel as good as the old snakes but they were bloody quick non the less!

Thanks everyone for your posts.

Sam

P.S- Carly, I went to 'quadsuk' to order the wheels and bearings and spoke to a guy called Steve. Absolute first class service and all the stuff arrived next day. I would reccomend them to anybody.

Sorry for long delay in replying here, been off the net for awhile.

They run 2 hour sessions (general skating as far as I'm aware) - I'm going tomorrow to check things out so I'll post a report then :)
