According to a September 10, 2006 article in the Edmunton Sun Newspaper, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police car struck a 10 year old girl while she was crossing the street in Edmunton, Canada: Read Full Article (http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Edmonton/2006/09/10/1822339.html)

Another skating accident involving a kid also happened recently in Canada. A 14 year old boy in Pitt Meadows Canada skated off of a freeway overpass!

These news stories are really scary. Do the kids in your area skate around the neighborhood?

Really sad news.

And it is only going to get worse as we are losing daylight and the weather is getting worse.

The trail I skate to work is now down to die-hard cyclists and myself. The number of near misses at intersections have gone up as it really grey.

Out by our house, we live in the boonies, I've only seen the occasional kid on a skateboard, and there is one family that I've seen on bikes. When I've taken my bike out on the road I've never seen anyone else.

It's really sad read news like these ones.
Here in Italy there's very few accident like the ones above fondamentally because it's forbidden skate in the street where cars run.

We can't even skate in the cycle lane..the truth is that we have nowhere to skate. Skate in the bicycle lane is tolerated but usually these place are too crowded for a relaxed skating.

We can only skate in parks and skate parks...and probably it's the best solution, if you think that in Italy there's the bad habit of not let anybody cross the street before car drivers have passed by..even if you are on the pedestrian crossing (don't know the exact name in your language).

here wins who has the biggest wheels...and there's no doubt skates are the smallest ones

Anyway, I think there should be more civic education and more knowing of risks and rules about traffic and street.
