It's not too surprising to get more back pain from skating into a head wind. Skating into the wind generally requires leaning forward more both to reduce the forward profile and to balance the forces that would otherwise push you onto to back side. That forward lean, of course, creates more back stress.

Further, strong winds are often blustery, which forces abrupt corrections when the wind changes. Those unplanned twists can also be hard on the back.
