85.4 in July. Late start to training for the marathon last month, and the last week of the month I was fighting an ugly chest cold.

Not much going on to interfere with the skating ritual. A couple of short seminars but no interviews at all. Which has become more of a problem. My unemployment runs out this month and my rent is going up 50% in October. My house mate is bolting for the Seattle area. That won't work for me but I may just have to move somewhere if it gets me a decent job. The Bay Area no longer offers any refuge if you are not raking in the cash. Barbary Coast was a fun race. The rest of the season, though, requires expenditures that I am not comfortable making right now. It is already too late for Grand Forks. Time is nearly up to book flights for Duluth. I do have an interview next week so I guess there is some hope, just not very much. |

Damn good turnout ESE! Man I hope you have luck finding work.
I got my 3rd best month: 50h:51m I had 55 total session. (2 a days for all but 10 days)

No shizzle! Needs a job to burn some of his time and stop making me look so bad. At least he is a little slow at posting so I can beat him at that.
And good-on-you too F2B. I can certainly count on the two of you to keep this thread alive. (and a few more chiming in finally). Cheers!

What began as a learning process for using a mini GPS unit (to make me better at selling them) turned into a yearlong obsession with racking up miles on my longboards and inline skates. I had a ton of fun but also discovered that chasing miles is not very relaxing (it is called "leisure time" for a reason") and resulted in a few overuse injuries that cost me $$ as well as time off the longboards or skates. Not to mention fiddling with the device when I should have been concentrating more on the nearby birds singing.
So in the spirit of finding my old chill self...no more GPS on a daily basis. Yes, I might still record some special event or route but not every day. If you are curious how the last 13 months went as well as year-to-date for 2016...here ya go! Cheers All! ![]()

Average speed is up noticeably. I've been retraining my form with mostly positive results. Part of that is spending more of my time on a long, smooth and mostly flat trail. Going out against the wind is brutal but coming back I can maintain 20mph. However, this only works if I hit all the buttons: Low, long extension, underpush, recovery "hang". Miss even one and I get scrub and/or wobble. It strains my muscles and sense of control. Heart rate is actually higher than going against the wind but it is kind of coming together. I'm hoping it will ready for Duluth, though landing on my butt at the end of today's skate is not going to help. I am doing Duluth, despite the lack of income. It came down to pretty much the last day to get an affordable flight and I bit the bullet. There is a decent chance I may have a 3-4 month contract before race but I'm not counting on it. |

Gave up the GPS but I will still look in here every month for inspiration. Yes...I am still skating.

62.8 miles in 6h2m in August. Pretty good for me. Average speed is down some on my new skates (4x90) and still trying to figure out what the deal is. Have replaced the wheels and they feel faster, and show maybe 0.5mph faster than the stock wheels, but still a fair bit slower than my old 4x80 setup. Everything I have, though, is 165mm mount, so I have some options to put my old 4x80 frame on my new skates, and I even have a real old 5x80 setup I can try too.

Lowest since April. This is attributed to an abundance of networking events and the taper before Northshore. Speed was up noticeably as I pushed the pace on the skating that I did to get ready for Northshore. Race pace listed here is somewhat inaccurate (pessimistic) as 3 early miles were not recorded. Unfortunately, the official time is inconsistent with what I *did* record so there just is no good data. Unfortunately, all the networking and other activity has not yet achieved the goal. This means this month has an additional stressor: I need to find a new place to live before the month is out and I don't have pay stubs to satisfy land lord paranoia. This is a heavy event week. I expect I will lose more skate days to apartment hunting and moving. Expect October volume to be low without September's speed bump. |

^Incredible!
I am still skating. Weather has been AWESOME so I been hitting the path before AND after work. Probably near 200 miles for Sept but without the GPS i could be full of bull.

4h of skating for 48 miles in September. Average speed back up a bit with some tweaks I've been making to my skates. October will probably be a light month - I've yet to get a skate in, and we've got the hurricane coming this weekend. Which is unfortunate, because (hurricane aside) the weather is finally back to reasonably comfortable temperatures. Hoping I can get a skate in early next week.
ESE, nice totals as always, and good luck with the job / housing thing. TZ |

There is residual drama on the last item but at the big stuff moving is done. Still, it is enough that I'm opting out of Silver Strand. I still haven't established good regular skate routes from the the new residence so November is likely to be low volume as well. There is even a chance I move again very soon. I interviewed with company in Petaluma two weeks ago. It is still technically in Bay Area but far on the opposite side. Not commutable. |

Moving once sucks. I had to move twice in 5 months one time - entire house of mine and my wife's stuff. I do not envy your situation. Good luck man.

Yay! A new month! Gonna skate all day tomorrow. Weather is going to be great and I am off work.
I am still KILLING IT nearly every day off, sometimes 6 hour sessions. Lucky to get one hour on work days due to early darkness. I quit the GPS thingy, so no data to report. Just letting y'all know I am still out there hittin' it hard.

Still, I only managed one full Sunday long skate. One was lost to moving, another to weather, and a third to the Thanksgiving Holiday. I did not move the Petaluma. I did spend much time exploring routes. I think I have a good 26 mile loop figured out but it took all month to get the details right. This hurt performance. It is hard to push when you are not sure where to go next and when facing unexpected congestion. On Tuesday, I plan to skate what I think is the final path. |

Rain and holiday travel make it challenging to get the miles. I did a little better than average this year. Average speed seems to have picked up. That is surprising given the conditions. Maybe my route a bit better dialled in. More likely it is because several social night skates were rained out. They always drag down the totals. I think January is going to be low volume and slow. When my skates aren't just rained out, I'm having to deal with cold, damp patches, and debris. Last edited by ese002; February 2nd, 2017 at 07:54 PM. Reason: Fixed "posting from the future" typo |

Got a new GPS watch that is a lot better than the old one. It's a Lezyne Micro C wrist watch. The screen is in COLOR! Stylin'!
![]() So...I have real data again. I have to admit that I am focusing on quality of skating rather than quantity of miles. Have been renting cars to get out of town to skate a lot too. The miles will have to take care of themselves. I am having too much fun! ![]() If you want to see my Strava page here is the linkage: https://www.strava.com/athletes/brooks_joey

The January deluge took quite a bite out of my skating. The only reason the totals are in any way similar to last year is by resorting to cycling. Historic knee issues always make me wary of long, aggressive bike rides but so far I have managed to avoid damage. When I was able to skate I had to deal with damp spots and debris making it challenging to push hard and smooth. February is starting like January. Today through the start of next week is all damp and deluge. |

Same in New Orleans. Not so much deluge but lots of lingering morning fog making everything slippery and impossible to get a decent push or lean into any kind of turn. Miserable. I switched to my longboard on occasion and those big, fat wheels have about 100x the contact patch as my inlines. Also the wheels durometer is much softer on the board. When it did rain in buckets it took FOREVER for things to dry out. Very unusual for our area during Winter months.
My best skating buddy resorted to going to adult nights at a local rink (she uses quad speed skates). Only problem she feared for her life driving home in the dense fog after midnight (adult night is 9-12PM). As I said, I just resorted to my longboard and got wet. Hey...I think this is the closest I have ever been to your skate mileage in a month period! Made me feel good somehow even though I feel your pain regarding the current effed-up weather patterns.
