Default Detroit Big Old Fashioned Reunion Skate

Thursday, August 11, 2011, 6:00 PM

Skaters will meet at:
Detroiter Bar
655 Beaubien, Detroit, MI

From the organizer:

Now that the weather delay is over, the 2011 20 year anniversary BOFS* reunion skate will be;

Thursday August 11th (*and* Thursday August 18th for those that want to do it again)
Where:
The Old Detroiter Bar (AKA, Malaka's)
655 Beaubien (at the intersection of Fort, Greektown)
Detroit, MI 48226
313-963-3355

Time:
Arrive 6:00-6:15 (or sooner to socialize), Skating will start precisely at 6:30pm. Yes, its on Thursday.

Why do it:
To celebrate, commemorate, and relive the 20 years that skaters have been pounding the pavement of the streets of Detroit and to re-join with the friends we've made there as well as to introduce new skaters to the wonderful skating available on Detroit's streets.

What we'll do:
Socialize a bit, gather for a group shot, skate a pre-planned and mapped route, stopping along the way at scenic spots and for a beer or two, and return to sit down for a chat and maybe some food. There will be a sag wagon available. In past years we've had 50-70 skaters for the BOFS skates but this year being the 20th anniversary of the beginnings of the downtown skating scene I'm hoping for more.

Route: Expect 10-12 miles at a leisurely pace with frequent regrouping stops. There will be a long stop in the middle.

Sag Wagon: I think I have a sag wagon and driver lined up but won't know for sure until that day. Can anyone offer a large vehicle and / or a driver as a backup plan?

What you need to do to prepare:
Do you remember how to skate (and stop) and do your wheels still roll? You might want to take a spin around the neighborhood if you don't know for sure. Or shine up your BIKE and bring it. If skating or biking don't work for you come anyway, hang out with us before, after, and at the midway stop along the skate route. Its more about showing up than skating. We miss you.

Parking ( changed): The parking garage built on top of the skater parking area is not available to the public. Some street parking is available Thursday nights in the area, particularly on Brush behind the Detroiter. Starting a month ago the parking meters must be paid up until 10PM. A pay parking lot is available 1/2 block toward the river on Beaubien (corner of Beaubien and Congress). Pay parking is available at a lot one block closer to Greektown on Brush (corner of Brush & Lafayette) The parking lot behind the Detroiter is closed to the public, but will be empty and skateable.

Weather: If there is a weather postponement I will send an email before 4:00 that day, but that's not going to happen.

This is not a beginner skate, you should be able to brake, navigate obstacles such as potholes and curbs and be able to skate for about 5 miles at a time. If you plan on attending I suggest bringing a few things: Helmet and pads, Blinkie lights, Water, Cell phone, Money for bar stop. Cyclists are also welcome.

Help needed:
1) Get the word out to all of the past participants in the Detroit street skating scene. If you were part of the big Detroit skates of the 90s try to get your old skater friends involved. Look through your email contacts, old phone lists, Facebook, etc. and get the word out.
2) Find and bring new skaters that might enjoy this or that might want to join the semi-regular Tuesday & Thursday Detroit skates.
3) Can you provide a large passenger vehicle to be used as a sag wagon or could you drive it? (a good option for someone that can't skate)

There will be a secondary / lesser BOFS re-do event one week later. Stay tuned for the meeting point for that skate.

Please get the word out to ex-skaters that may not be on this list or others that may be interested.

I hope to see you there.
