Default 2008 Disney Inline Marathon Has Been Cancelled

The date for the 2008 Disney Inline Marathon has been posted on the Disney Sports web site. Looks like we're back to a May date (05/04/2008).

Happy Trails,

Don

. . . yeah, well, I'm still working on talking to the right person about course changes -- if not for the full race, at least for the second half. I may not get anywhere with it, but I'm still trying.

Happy Trails,

Don

Better the Boardwalk than that awful parking lot -- that really slowed me this year, it felt like I was skating on glass pebbles. I admit I used the wrong wheels for a rough surface but the Boardwalk I think is fun & have skated at Disney every year.

If someone is talking to Disney make sure they do something about the nasty concrete joint in Epcot at Japan. When I got there the paramedics were already there tending to a lady with a broken wrist (got to wear wrist guards!!) and someone else who had fallen. I wiped out - the first time on the street in 14 years - but was able to continue (no PR this year). One paramedic said to the other paramedic - "well, we might as well set up camp here". While the paramedics were tending to my road rashes three other people wiped out. I was telling them you need to get somebody 50 feet up the path and holler warnings. I don't know if anyone from the race did which was unusual because they are so good hollering at the boardwalk and entering the back lots of Epcot and MGM.

The parking lot was bad! I could hardly even tell it was paved it was so full of gravel.

Even with these gripes, it is still the best race I get to!

I'm glad that it's not right on top of the Tampa Classic like it has been recently. I think it will help increase participation in both events.

Sadly, yes, I've heard from someone connected with Disney Sports Program & Event Sales that the 2008 Disney Inline Marathon has been canceled. It's a very sad day for me because I got into inline skating only because Disney was promoting the 2004 inline marathon. And I've done the Disney race every year since. On the flip side, I guess the Disney marathon came and went at the right time to get me started and to stay involved, whether the Disney marathon continued or not.

I think this is similar to the Long Beach Inline in which the promoter has various opportunities to promote sports and has to select those that make the most sense to continue and/or replace. Disney continues to add running and triathlon events which consistently draw bigger crowds then even the North Shore Inline Marathon, so I would not be surprised to see a running or triathlon event on the weekend originally slated for the inline marathon.

So, there's an opening in the schedule for someone who wants to elevate their April/May inline event.

Happy Trails,

Don Patton

If you'd like to do your part in attempting to save this event, go to this site and submit a message pledging your plans for attending and ask them not to cancel. I did.

It's not the boardwalk that is all that bad, it's the epcot parking lot. It will break you. With all the bragging about how flat the course was on the website, the epcot lot came as a giant surprise. Overall though it was a really good race and it would be a shame if it was cancelled.

Really? Didn't bother me one bit! I guess everybody finds their bad and good spots! I fell in the boardwalk but didn't really care too much!

I really think if we want to keep on having some good races around we should stop bitching about them! With 1000 skaters, I am sure it is impossible to please everyone!

I had to go through cow grid, sections of unpaved trail, and a couple inch drop between a bridge and the trail when I went out for a roll with the local cycling club:-) If you are afraid of boardwalks and car park, go to city night skate etc so you become used to and confident about the various conditions. Once you are over the fear factor, you'll feel great! A very important part of speedskating is the ability to handle such adverse things. Ever see Eddy Matzger skating on the great wall or cobblestone castle, roof top? Skates are extension of our body if not part:-)

Ok, look at everything before leaping.

The email is in the inline planet article. Email to

wdw.sports.marathon.endurance@ disneysports.com

My comment was -

I like the idea of mixing my fitness goals with a family vacation. I thought that was the premise of the Wide World of Sports.

???

I think what you are saying is that by canceling the race, Disney is depriving the 850 skaters who participated in the Inline Marathon weekend from mixing fitness goals with a family vacation. If that's what you are saying, then you also need to consider that Disney is offering about 2,000 that same opportunity by replacing the Inline Marathon with the Minnie Marathon (that's the number of runners who participated in the Minnie Marathon in 2006 and that's the event that replaced the weekend that was originally slated for the Inline Marathon in 2008). While I didn't want to see the Disney Inline Marathon get canceled, you can't argue that they are depriving people of meeting their fitness goals when they are offering events that serve more participants.

Sorry if I misunderstood your point.

I was told the Disney folks committed to having the marathon for 5 years and after having the event from 2003 to 2007, they decided to cancel it. I'm not sure who parties were to the 5 year agreement, but I'm guessing it might have been between Disney and the race director. But again, that is only a guess.
