Default Skate Ranch Santa Ana CA. on Facebook

Greetings everyone, I just stumbled on a FB page dedicated to Budd Van Roekel's old rink in Santa Ana CA for those that might be interested.

They seem to have a good number of pictures of west coast quad speed skaters from the 80's as well as former art skaters from the 60's & 70's.

Enjoy!

Thumbs up I DJ'd @ Skate Ranch in the Early 90's

I DJ'd @ The Skate Ranch in the late 80's and met my wife at that rink, we are still together and still skating 20 years later. They tore it down to improve interstate 5. Thanks for the FB link.

Default Thank you

I didn't skate there, but it was really great to see those photos. Sort of reminds me of when I first started skating.

wow! Thanks for the link! I am now reconnecting with friends from the '80s.

I never skated at or for Santa Anna, but many of their skaters... like Curt labeda, et al were those who I wanted to be like.

Default Santa ana skate ranch speed team

What i remember about the skate ranch is their great speed teams.
Led by grady and mary merrill. Mary was a many time senior lady
national champion and relay champion.
Plus there was champions like sandy delaney - diane merrill -
mike & pat layport (brothers) - mark cole - tony gomez - wendell smith -
karen & sandy west (sisters) etc. Etc. Etc.
When your team went up against santa ana you was going against
the best.
Gardy merrill - mike layport - wendell smith are deceased.
I remember all very well.
As is many things from roller speed skating this team i'll always
remember.
I do have all these racer on film and watching them now and then
brings back many memories yet also is sad to this old coach.

I can still remember it like it was yesterday watching Mary Merrill (who was by then a grandmother) race and win Master Ladies at one of their local meets, roll straight thru the finish line and into the box office where she lit up a cigarette and puffed on the sucker like it was an oxygen tank.

Grady was in a class all by himself. There will never be another Grady.
