It was a sad day to see the second place horse, the only filly in the race run her heart out only to shatter both front ankles and be put down on the track right after the finish....

Not to be morbid, but how do they do that? I was wondering if they had a way to do it that wasn't traumatic for the fans to see.

If a horse can stand, they will lead it into the Ambulance Trailer and will tend to it off the track. In this instance with both front ankles shattered, they gave the horse an injection that put her down within a minute. It was the humane thing to do and is common practice under these circumstances.

This was an outstanding filly, it is not common to run the distaff against the colts. She beat all but one horse in a strong 20 horse field, and was obviously in much pain coming down to the wire but did not display the problem until they were galloping out going towards the first turn after the finish line. She may have given the winner a better run for his money otherwise....although the 1st place horse pulled off an amazing feat by coming out of the 20 hole to win, something that does not happen very often in any race as there is much additional ground to cover to get to the rail position down track....

A sad day for horse racing, but if they continue to run them at the age that they do, not much will change other then the synthetic surfaces now showing up at many tracks have a 25% lower incidence of breakdowns, vs the harder natural tracks.....a move in a better direction say most vets that work the race track industry.

You would have been more depressed, had you skated on the BEAUTIFUL floor there and got to see the reform school customers that dont appreciate it. The owners are old school mother and son who keep a great rink, but like I said. I have never picked up so much dirt and garbage off a floor that looks so good.

Okay, that sounds appropriate. Shame to lose such a great horse.
