Default Northland Roller Rink

The Northland Rink Had A Corner That Was So Bad No Amount Of Powder Helped It. I Hated When Our Team Had To Skate Regionals There. I Have The 1970 Great Lakes Regional Meet That Was Held There On Tape And The Corner Just Shines It's So Slippery.
My Teams Never Skated That Floor Well. We Skated Regionals There In 1970 & 1974 And Didn't Do Well.
Different Story At Nationals.
Plus Nationals Was A Bare Wood Floor And Regionals Was Usually Held On A Floor That Was Plastic Coated And Powder Was Used.

I dunno Tony,

I only skated Northland on plastic wheels and that was one of my favorite rinks. Maybe because it was so big.

Kentwood? So you had a very fast freshman boy there at that time right?

in 77 i think your right was it bobby johnson or clay ellerbrock its been along time. i think it was bobby though. he might have won nationals that year. i know he won but i'm not sure of the year. kentwood had alot of really fast skaters in 77, as did alot of teams.

Yeah, that's it. I think Bobby won in 78 or 79, I was at Bonaventure then.

No kidding, if you were anything less than GREAT back then you were lucky to make it out of the State meet.

Thumbs up aint that the truth

you hit the nail on the head with that one. if you got out of state you could skate, yeah buddy! and if you made it out of regionals you were awesome. let alone being a national champion. the people that just made it were great! and bobby was great, fast as hell!

Oh the tube sock era, how sweet it was. I remember how hard it was to make it out of state for sure. Here in Texas it was VERY hard. You might as well been skating Nationals at some of the meets. When Mid Cities was blowing and going it was almost impossible to make it out. They had nearly 200 on the team at one point. Skating at their practices was just like a meet. Their skaters at warm up would wind around the whole floor!

You should have tried skating out of Santa Ana in the late 70's. I think most of the club went to nationals every year.

you guys are exatly right. these folks nowadays got it easy 4 to qualify out of regionals and 5 guys with no heats. they say the old days are gone but man there were twice as many skaters then. and most of them were good!

I think that there were way more than twice as many. There were probably several hundred skaters in SoCAl alone distributed throughout a dozen or more clubs.
