I used to paint shellac on the sides of my ice skates to stiffen them, it cracked.
The fact that they are now stiff.. stiff as in the leather has lost all it's oil and is steel or stiff as in the layer of paint has stiffened them up

If the leather has lost it's oil the're toast
If they are stiff from the paint, try some
http://www.plastidip.com/

Comes in colors and won't Crack

OMG you don't paint leather....You DYE it.
years ago I used nail polish remover to remove leather dye/finish to redye boots.
there's probably something better though. As for removing paint....goof off maybe?

Good luck. At least you learned something.

Neatsfoot oil in large doses after removing paint my help but it may not.

You can use FABRIC PAINT on your shoes as long as the surface is oil free.
My avatar PIC has the orange and white stripes painted on the the Nike Microfiber material. I used regular acrylic at first and it cracked. Had to peel it all off and re-do with the fabric paint. Since then all is good.

Nail polish remover (or acetone) will take it off. I have used it on really stubborn paint. I'm sure it's not exactly *good* for the leather, but I never noticed any damage from it either.

And to agree with what was already said, make sure you use leather dye (the kinda that you paint on, not the spray can) or fabric paint to redo them. If you want them white, I suggest leather dye and be prepared to put a number of coats on it. White is by far the hardest color to make look good IMO. It can be done but you gotta have patience.

thanks i was thinking about acetone i used it on different things before but i wasnt sure if it would destroy the leather i assume it will be just fine if i use some sort of leather oil on my boots after... how should i put the acetone on the boots?? should i just rub it on really hard with a toothbrush or a rag?? thanks for all your help i appreciate it, Cameron

This stuff will do the job without damaging the leather (contains Ethyl Acetate). Leather will remain soft and supple.
