And just to jump on the bandwagon... Hoffman Estates is one of the larger Chicago Suburbs, the area where we're having the race is really nice, you can have dinner before/after the race at any number of great restaurants (various top Chicago pizza joints are within driving distance, such as Malnati's and Giordano's) you can hit Woodfield mall if you have time, and one of the Hotels is practically on the course - others are very close. It should be a really great event.

We should be able to draw some good rec/fitness skater numbers too - the mayor is totally behind promoting the race. I for one will be out and about promoting the race locally "guerrilla" style.

I don't think the course is final yet (Major can correct me if otherwise) but it's going to be a good one, with at least a couple rolling hills. The center of the area is basically forest preserve - and the other side is the interstate. If you are remotely near the midwest (and even if not) you have to make this event! (This means YOU Speedy!)

July 26th? Nuts. This will be the first time I have missed the Chicagoland marathon. We will be doing the vacation thing in Florida on the 26th. Nuts!

edit: Last year's marathon was a blast and very well done. I really wish that I could be there this year. Anyone who can get there should support this race.

Major or TD,
We're interested for sure ... it is on our list of possible events to do in 2008. I understand the course isn't set yet but are we talking "point to point" or "loops". If loops, how many for the full?
When will the info be available regarding hotels, etc. Not having been to Chicago before, we'd want a hotel downtown where we can walk to restaurants, sites, do the tourist thing, etc?? and then drive to the race.

I believe there should be more info soon, but it will be some kind of loop, not a point to point. Probably a bigger loop than last year though, I'm guessing something like 3 laps or so.

They are still finalizing things, but this Hilton is right by where the course will be. I know they will try and negotiate some preferred rates with either them or another close by hotel. You will be right off a I-90 there, and it's a straight half hour or so shot from there to downtown - easy as pie.

Either I or the Major would be glad to clue you in on specifics if you want to do things, just let us know.

Thanks for the info! But, we want to stay downtown, not 1/2 hour out. Our plan, if we go, is to stay for 3 or 4 nights, so we'll need names of downtown hotels as well as any restaurants (casual as well as upscale), sites, etc you'd recommend. But I'll let you know once we make the decision and we can gather the info from there.

Gotcha. As you can imagine, there are lots of options. Just realize you'd have to leave very early in the morning on race day to make sure you get there in time and all.

Default Chicago downtown

This will give you a good start, just keep in mind, anything down town will be
expensive.

Getting up early at that time of year is not a problem. Typically we are up by 4:45 am and out skating by 5:30 am. So we shouldn't have a problem.

You're talking about a big city. What are your interests, other than skating? How much do you want to spend on a room? Will you be staying Saturday night? Man, there's so much to do in Chicago. Even in the winter you should check out Navy Pier. Also the Shedd Aquarium, The Planetarium, and the Field Museum are all on what's called the Museum Campus. You can just take a walk on Michigan Ave from the river to Oak St. Plenty of stores and eats. I can go on and on. Then there's the neighborhoods. Wicker Park, Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Uptown, Greek town, China town, Near West Side and so on and so on.

Oh, and don't forget, Chicago doesn't roll up the streets at 7:00pm. It's a late night town. That's the city. Now if you're staying in the burbs there's plenty to do as well. As Tom D mentioned, there's Woodfield Mall very close by. Ok, I have to stop now.

We'd come in on Thursday and leave Tuesday, staying downtown for the duration. We'd drive to the race early a.m. and back to downtown after. Interests, let's see, we'd check out the museums for sure, also any galleries, definitely the pier, of course the shops. They're all great suggestions. We have 3 free days -- I'm sure we'll be able to experience some of them.

As for spending on a room, we had already assumed that downtown would be pricey. I checked out the link from ONOU and no surprise there -- room rates are comparative to downtown Montreal at high season and mid-range Manhattan pretty much anytime. They are what they are! The Marriott doesn't seem too outrageous, nor does the Intercontinental considering where they're located. That is the area that we'd probably want to stay -- from the map they appear to be in the hub of things. Am I correct in thinking that? Once we make a decision about going, I'll delve deeper into the hotel accommodations. At least I have a rough idea about the hotel costs at this point.

ONOU,
Thanks for the links. The Drake Hotel looks amazing and the rates seem to be in line (no pun intended) with the Mariott and Intercontinental. Is it located downtown?? The menu at the Saloon Steakhouse looks pretty nice too, as does the wine list.
