Default Why the Forum Was Down on April 7, 2008

The SkateLog Forum was was taken offline by its Web site hosting company today (April 7, 2008) because tens of thousands of people were trying to connect to the forum at the same time and it caused the forum database to crash. I might need to upgrade my hosting service to permanently prevent the problem from happening again, but for now I am working with my hosting company to adjust some settings and bring the forum online again. We are trying to think of a solution that does not require upgrading to a higher level of service, but if all else fails we will probably do that. The forum is back up and I hope we don't keep experiencing the problem. I'm so exhausted from dealing with this issue but SO relieved to have the forum back online.

By the way, when the forum appears to be down, try connecting to the forum Web site home page at http://www.skatelogforum.com. If the forum is ever down for an extended period of time I will always try to post updates on that page.

OMG - you and me both!!! I am almost always calm, cool, and collected, even when things get crazy in my life, but when my forum or my Web sites go down, and I can't immediately fix the problem... it totally stresses me out! But finally the forum is back up and I can breathe again. Phew...

I was on the forum when it went down.. at first, I didn't know what to do.

Then I went outside and went skating. You should have forum outages more often, thanks!

No outages while I am at work though......my productivity might skyrocket!

That could only lead to greater expectations and more TPS reports for me to handle.

It is really cool, but now we have to figure out a way to let all of them in without crashing our forum! LOL...

I wonder if the database errors that have been creeping up the past week or so were due to the pending down-time that occurred. Hopefully it won't happen again. The forum software has seemed extremely stable up until that point.

Was it all on the server end? Do you know what server they are running? Hopefully it's not on a virtual server, as since I switched some stuff at work to one, it's been rather unstable.

Glad it's back and things weren't lost. When it wasn't back by 6 PM as the post on the front page stated it should be, I got worried that we might have had to do a roll-back on it.

Good job on keeping us as informed as possible!

I sympathize with you Kathie. I can imagine what you are going through as I experience the same symptoms when something like that happens to my website and/or forum.

I was wondering... Ten of thousands of people trying to connect, you write. I can image that lots of people like the SkateLog Forum, but when that amount knock on your virtual door, it looks like someone is trying out his new hackertools and DOS-attacking you.

Interesting note to Kathy:
I also belong to a women's biking forum which uses the same software as this one. Every time the skate forum goes down, so does the other forum!
Then they both are back up and running at the same time too. That must mean something.
