Default Still Undecided About Joining? Check this Out

There are only four slots left on the 2008 team. If you are still on the fence about skating in Montreal, check out this short video I put together. It may help you decide.

If the count passes ten will we form two teams, even if they end up being only six or seven?

Default Gustavo in Chicago

Met Gustavo today. He is in Chicago on a work assignment. Who knew?! We took him on a street skate through downtown Chicago: Michigan Avenue, Grant Park, Museum Campus, Printers Row, LaSalle Street Canyon, Lower Wacker Drive, River North, The Viagra Triangle, Gold Coast, Old Town, Lincoln Park. He treated us to lunch at Galway Arms Irish Pub. Very friendly personable guy. He will be a great team member in Montreal.

Skated on the F1 track yesterday (VRL marathon) and happy to report that the track is in great condition and the hairpin turn has been repaved. No more rough asphalt when turning that corner. It is sweet.

I found this website with lots of great pictures of you all at the Texas Road Rash earlier this year

Note there are many albums; it will take you some time to go through all of them.

Alright definites - time is drawing nearer so we need to tighten it up. Last night I bought my plane tickets. Since the cheapest round trip ticket to Montreal I could find was $550 we decided to fly into Burlington instead. It saves a couple hundred dollars, and I figured it might be fun to drive across the border. If anyone else decides to take this route, you're welcome to join us to split the costs. We're arriving in Burlington on Thursday afternoon and flying out on Tuesday afternoon.

Here are the three options that the Skater's Quest team is looking at concerning travelling to Montreal:
  1. Drive from DC to Montreal – it is approximately 650 miles from DC to Montreal which takes about 11-12 hours to drive with rest stops and border crossing. It is mostly interstate highway the whole way so it is an easy, but long drive.
  2. Fly to Burlington and then drive to Montreal – Jet Blue has numerous flights from Dulles through JFK to Burlington, VT. The cost today is $287 but it goes on sale often and Krista saw a price of $129 several weeks ago. From Burlington it’s a 2-hour drive through the scenic Lake Champlain area, across the border, and into Montreal. A full size minivan rental from Enterprise (for Friday through Tuesday) is $330 and a full size SUV from Hertz is $700. If 5 people share the cost of the minivan the per-person cost is $66, the SUV is $140. For the last two years, about half the team has done this option.
  3. Fly directly to Montreal – this option has gotten very expensive this year; the cheapest ticket that I saw yesterday was from United for $693.

My guess is that most of the team will go with option 2, some will drive, and maybe a few will fly direct.

For a hotel, we got a contract with the Novotel Montreal Centre for 15 rooms at $149/night. Its not the cheapest hotel but it is very comfortable, only 20 minutes from the track, and close to shopping and the historic downtown area. The team has stayed at the Novotel for the past two years and found it very nice. Their phone number is 514-861-6000.

Jessica - we take the following route from Burlington and it avoids all of the long lines at the large customs border check points and it is a very scenic drive, you can follow this route on Google Maps: From Burlington, take I-89 north to Vermont Route 2 which goes north through the Lake Champlain islands. As Rt 2 nears the Canadian border, it turns west into New York state and deads ends at Rt 11 in the town of Rouses Point. Turn left on Rt 11, go several blocks and turn right on Pratt Street, go to the end of the street and turn right on Rt 276 which is Church Street. This road goes north and then turns left where it parallels the US/Canadian border for several miles. It then comes to a t-intersection, make a right and the Canadian customs building will be in sight. Drive up to the booth, show your passport, and off you go on Canadian Rt 221. Follow this for about two miles, make a left on Montee St. Louis which is Rt 202. This intersects with their interstate Rt 15 which takes you directly to Montreal. We have never had to wait at either the Canadian or US sides of the border, and the border agents were very friendly since they get so little traffic.

Howard, thank you for all of the information I booked a Jetblue flight and paid only $240 total round trip into Burlington.

We stayed at the Lord Berri last year, but it looks like it's a bit more expensive this year.

Default Flights?

I fly in Friday morning and fly back Monday morning. Direct to Montreal.

Do not have a hotel yet. Last year I stayed at the Hotel Le Dauphin at 1025 De Bleury St. The Flying Fossils stayed there last year and I got one of their rooms. This year? We'll see.
