What kind of surface is used for these races? It looks extremely fast. Of course, these folks would make any surface look fast.

No, unfortunately I can't make it to the speed worlds this year, so I will be looking forward to all of your reports.

Only a few days remain until the 2006 CIC Inline World Championships in Anyang Korea. Mexico, Spain and Ecuador have just had their trials this last weekend leaving the selection right up until the last minute. Some of them still don’t know who will be in the team.

A number of teams have already arrived at worlds and they are all testing a variety of wheels. Hyper has a new wheel that they developed for the Anyang track, and the Matter wheel is working well as well but it looks like the dual durometer MPC wheel may be the wheel of choice among the athletes.

Default Asia

It was more than a decade ago that Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) shocked everyone by attending their first world champs on inlines and obtaining a silver on debut. They then backed that up with 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze in the same year in the Junior CIC World Championships in Barrancabermeja (Colombia) which kick started the Asian charge. Sadly, political issues prevented part of the team coming in recent years.

An avalanche of success followed as Korea stepped up and obtained their first inline world champsionship medal in Mar del Plata 1997.

Inline skating is now booming in South Korea with the Incheon and Seoul Marathons widely regarded as two of the best and most popular marathon events in the world today.

2005 was a big year for Asia with the debut of the CIC World Championships in Suzhou, China and 2006 could be even bigger for the most populated continent on earth.

More than 50 countries are expected to participate in Anyang in just over a week from now. Kwok Chae is the famous star of Korean skating but our sources indicate that they have more than one secret weapon that they are waiting to unleash on the world of speed skating.

Most of the teams have now arrived in Korea and it is only 4 days until the start of the CIC Inline World Championships.

The French team arrived in Anyang from Paris on Friday and their new star Yan Guyader had this to say about the track. “The track seems to be really fast with long straight and short corners but is really bumpy. I’d like to get a title after being second last year but I would be happy with any kind of medals cause after the long marathon season and European Championships. I’m really tired at the moment. I’m really not in my best shape of the season but you know racing alone the whole season is hard¨

After his great results at the World Inline Cup (6th at the world ranking) winning the marathons in Saint Moritz and Munich and of a shining performance in the recent European Championships in Cassano d´Adda (Italy), Yan Guyader is one of the big candidates to medal in the long distance events. ¨I guess I’m one of the candidates but the Colombians, Koreans and Mantia are still the favorite because they are really traditional racers along the year whereas I focus on the marathons. Good luck to all the skaters competing at the Worlds¨ Yan said.

Some of the big absentees in the French Team are Pascal Briand and Alexis Contin, two of the stars of inline speed skating who announced their retirement from the world championships.

Yep. To match the picture below, from left to right.
It's Mr Lai Yongquan of Team Revo, Mr Daryl Chan of Team Speed Virus, and Ms Ethel Lui of Team Speed Virus.

Gidday, I'm a Kiwi who has been living in Anyang for six years. If anyone coming here for the World Speed Champs needs any help, give me a call.
There's quite a big expat community here.

cheers,

Only one day remains until the start of the World Championships here in Anyang, Korea. Many teams spent the day practicing relays and doing a few sprints without making themselves too tired. Some teams only arrived last night and they were very anxious to test out the track. The conditions are hot in the day with the temperature around 30C but mild in the evening which will be good for the finals. Most skaters are accepting of the slightly bumpy conditions with the saying ‘it’s the same for everyone’ being fairly common. Most skaters also agree that skaters with small frames will revel in the bumpy conditions.

All skaters are saying that that this is one of the best facilities that have ever hosted an Inline World Championships and there is an abundance of praise for the organizing committee. The hosts are extremely helpful and courteous.

Tonight, the skaters will enjoy the opening ceremony at 7.30pm local time, before getting to bed as early as possible. Racing kicks off tomorrow morning with the Junior women’s 300m time trails. The Chinese Taipei team looked fantastic in training today and with similar tracks to this track back home, they should have confidence in obtaining a good result tomorrow.

Stay tuned to the full live coverage @

Have you seen "Desiree's" postings over on racereports.net? It makes a person want to be there in person. Your pics are the next best thing.

Thanks!
