Default Another bearing shield question

So I obtained a complete set of Fafnirs the other day. The pic shows the two different designs (there are 8 of each in my set.)

I have read that you can pull off one shield for cleaning and re-oiling but I haven't heard any detailed method. It sounds like it's all brute force? Just stick a push pin through the shield and hope you don't damage the balls or retainer? Any thoughts?

OK the ones in your pix appear to have permanent shields. That means they are not able to be removed and then reinstalled. They require prying one of the shields off (KDD means shields on both sides) which damages it, most likely beyond reuse. That means the damaged shield goes in the bin.

Typically I use a very small (think jewelers) screw driver and wedge it between the inner race and the edge of the shield and then pry up. Depending on the thickness of the shield, it may take 3 or 4 attempts as you work your way around the inner race until the shield distorts enough to pop out.

Interestingly enough, I have never seen either of those style Fafnir shields in sk8s before. Don't recall a Japanese Fafnir ever and have only seen the C7 clearance designation on the German 8 balls.

EDIT: Got ya on the small screwdriver. I missed it on my phone. I'm gonna try that tonight and will post pics of results when if done.

Thanks for your help!

I knew I'd be losing a shield but I can't figure out how to pry one off without damaging either race, balls, or retainer? There is no gap between sheilds and either race. Any suggestions on tool or procedure to use without damaging the rest of the bearing?

Default Nice.

I was suspicious the bearing on the right was an 8 ball. Never seen a KDD configured 8 ball Fafnir before, or any marked that way for that matter. Thanks for sharing. Hope they clean up and work well for ya.

So in the last 2 months, I have seen 2 types of 8 ball Fafnirs I have not seen before. The one in this thread and a full set of 38-2RS (8mm with 2 rubber seals) 8 balls. I need to get some pix of the 38s to post.
