Default More art boot love (with some history)

I picked up the pieces for these late last year, the boots are Riedell 220 Retros that were used in the 2012 production of Starlight Express. The plates are very early Snyder Dance Deluxes, serial number 876, so 1940s vintage, and the wheels are Fomac rentals cut down to 40mm by the lovely folks at Sk8 Fanatics

The plates are about 153mm wheelbase, shorter than I'm used to, but the smaller wheels make them feel rock solid - basically, the front axle is where I have it on my other dance skates and the back axle is where I have it on my derby skates, lol

In that last pic you can see where the dancer who had the skates had ID'd them so they wouldn't get mixed up back stage, he also signed them, which is nice ... however, he also half destroyed the boots, I had to straighten the soles from excessive warping, then get the soles put back on (hence the nails), then stretch them to get the toe shape back to original-ish.

They're amazingly comfy, I'm going to get to roll them properly, hopefully, on Friday night

Default High Tops And Heels

Hi HK:
You certainly are amazingly creative and not afraid to go against the accepted skate norms!

The plate does appear to be a tad shorter than what I would mount on a High Top and Heels set up.

This is a unique build and I would be interested to hear your reviews on how these skate!

Cheers,
Dan

As much as I love my 965's, I skated art boots for most of my life, and I'd probably still use them if they weren't trashed. Seems like the Art may be making a comeback.

Your setup is quite nice for the age - they look new! New cushions? Pivot cups?

What do you normally skate?

I will be reporting back in due course

What I have been skating on for dance are my New English boots on XK4s, that are about 160mm long ... the big thing, though, is that my foot is about 5mm closer to the ground in these, thanks to a thinner sole and the base plate itself being thinner

Didn't get to skate them on Friday after all, unfortunately the rink I wanted to go to only does 12-17 year olds on that night for some reason (?!)

Hopefully I'll be able to get to a good rink in the next week or so ...

At our local rink on adult only nights there seems to be at least as many kids on the floor as adults.

I find it interesting that on Adult Night teens are allowed on the rink and yet, in your case adults aren't allowed on the rink on Teen night.

Just musing.

I'm still interested to hear how they skate so keep us posted.

Thanks,

Dan

Yeah, this rink does 18+ sessions on a Thursday, they get lots of drunken hen nights all dressed up like it was the 80s

Well, I skated them today, only on these wheels because it was on concrete

The much lower deck height really makes a huge difference, and when combined with small wheels (those are 47mm diameter) the short wheelbase feels rock solid - doing grapevines on my toes felt rock solid, whereas my taller skates make it all feel like hard work.

I did find that one of the pivot pins is a bit too far out even when screwed all the way in, so I need to fix that, but they handle nicely and you can feel the spring steel doing it's job!

Default High Tops And Heels

Hi HK:

Often times people post pictures of their latest build but fail to follow up with a review of how they skate!

Thank You for posting the pictures of this rather unique build but even more for the follow-up review of how they perform!

The pictures and review are motivating and inspiring me to look into procuring a shorter set of wheels! SEDS

Cheers,

Dan

Sure could, those are much much newer (aluminum hangers and stamped truck positions) and in better condition than mine were!
