Default Advertising Forum Problems and Suggestions

A couple of people have asked about recent policy changes in the advertising forum, and if they were made because we are having space or database problems. The changes were not the result of technical problems in the forum. We have been trying to address some of the issues that have been annoying our buyers and sellers.

(1) We were starting to see serious bumping wars. Sellers were repeatedly replying to their own posts, bumping them, or asking their friends or sales people to do it, so their ads would keep moving to the top of the pile. It was becoming very annoying to the people whose new posts were always immediately buried under a ton of older bumped posts. Sellers have even been known to create multiple identities, just so they could start fake discussions about the products they were selling, and thus bump them to the top.

(2) People in the business of selling skates were posting multiple "stuff in inventory" ads every day, completely burying the ads of skaters trying to sell their own stuff.

(3) Beginning and intermediate skaters, who are not familiar with brands and model names, have not been able to do much shopping in our advertising forum because most of the posts have subject lines such as "lips" or "298's for sale cheap". Beginning skaters and others who have not yet acquired SEDS have no idea what a 298 is (skates? wheels? bearings?).

(4) This one is not a problem, but it's noteworthy. More then half of the ads in the advertising forum were for skate wheels. I addressed this issue myself today, by adding a new subforum for selling skate wheels. That immediately reduced the size of the main advertising forum by half, making non-wheel ads easier to spot.

Any comments or suggestions about how we could improve the SkateLog Advertising Forum?

- Kathie

Default My 2 cents..

I would continue with the splits.... Categories for boots, plates, complete sk8s, accessories....

Great minds think alike Doc! I am - right now - building an experimental new advertising forum with separate subforums by type of item being sold. I am initially organizing it like this:

- Quad Skates and Boots
- Quad Wheels
- Quad Plates
- Inline Skates and Boots
- Inline Wheels
- Inline Frames
- Other Skating Products
- Want to Buy

What does everybody think?

I think it is a great idea. It will be much less hassle finding exactly what you are looking for.

i like the idea and its understandable but it was so easy to just go down the list and see if there was anythign new.... exspecially on my phone it was nice to just click the button to get online and scroll down...but this will make it easyer for people looking for certain things...

I think it is a great idea. Maybe no seperate sub forums just for quad plates and inline plates. With seperate Skates and Plates areas they could be listed in and/or the other especially for people wanting to sell skates partially assembled or are willing to break them up. The Skates area could be for fully or partially assembled skates.

How about a seperate sub forum for vendors trying to sell & promote their products?

My suggestion would be:
- Quad Skates
- Quad Wheels
- Inline Skates
- Inline Wheels
- Clothing
- Other Skating Products
- Want to Buy
- Vendor area

Once again, thanks for keeping on top of things Kathie!!!!!!

I like the break out. It follows many of the automotive enthusiast forums in how they handle their classified (advertising) section.

Question: Would bearings be found in the wheels forum or Other Skating products?

Only wheels go in the wheels forum because we have SO many wheel posts. Bearings, spacers, and other wheel supplies and components can go in the "Other Skating Products" forum.

Is anyone else having this problem??

Every time I enter the wheel and/or boot sub forum I have to go down to the bottom and sort it by the latest post. Somehow its set for "Thread Start Time" which is not the most current post and I cannot change it to the "latest" unless I change it myself every time I enter the forum. Very annoying!!!! Is this a mod function or change? It only happens in these two forums, the rest are sorted by current post time..

it is the new way of doing things to make it impossible to "bump" your own threads and all that... im not to happy with it either

The advertising subforums are the only forums in which posts are sorted by creation date. For two reasons: (1) so the newest items won't immediately be buried by a bunch of older items with more recent comments, and (2) to disallow bumping wars. We've had a big problem with bumping wars in the past, but now that issue is a non-issue. Which I'm sure you guys know I love!

Outside the advertising forum, all of our forums and subforums are sorted by most recent post.
