Default 2007 Raps24KiKa in the Netherlands - Race Report

Just got my employer to sponsor a team for the RAPS24 - wich this year is officially named "RAPS24KiKa".

the "KiKa" is for the childrens cancer fund - wich i have bit of a bond with due to the fact that i was volunteer at one of the specialist centres here in the netherlands for 10 years. (thank God not from experience in my direct family or friends)

The RAPS24KiKa will take place from friday august 31 16.00 hrs untill saturday september 1 - guess what time?

Default 24 Hour Skating Events in 2007

Hi Skaters!

First I Will Introduce me on the forum.
My name is Rick Broshuis 22 years old and living in the Netherlands.
Last edition of Le Mans, we won the Student classment with team Raps.

This year I will organise the Raps24KiKa.
The only 24-hour skating competition in The Netherlands, this year organised in collaboration with KiKa (foundation children cancer free, see also: www.kika.nl).

The raps24KiKa will be ridden at a magnificent cycle track at recreation park The Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal. Teams of at least 3 persons with a maximum of 6 will ride the tour on the track in relay form.

This year the raps24 will take place on Friday August 31st and Saturday May 1st.

Last year three teams of the Ambuskaters from the Hague collected money for KiKa. The enthusiastic participation and money collecting of the Ambuskaters led to cooperation between Raps and KiKa this year.

Naturally it is a wonderful opportunity to form a team of your own and to ride this unique competition together with your colleagues.
A few spearheads from the programme:

Cooperation of former Olympic skating champion Yvonne van Gennip
Marvellous live music.
Oom-pah band increasing the atmosphere.
Drive-in show.

For entry and more information visit out website: www.raps24kika.nl. We are looking forward to greeting you at the take-off.

Yours sincerely,

Rick Broshuis

Thumbs up Great day

So here i am - kinda recovered from the event

There were 33 teams to meet up in this challenge - with big variation from real semi-pro racers to first-week-skating-beginners. The athmosphere was very good- there was no harsh competition but fair and enthousiastic play - like sport should be!

Alas - friday at midnight the "showertap opened" and real heavy rain poored down. The race was stopped for 2,5 hours because it would simply be irresponsible to continue with so much water on the dark track through the wood.

Then at 3 am all teams were put back on track - lap after lap.

my team was put together from a buch of pretty much unknown to each other - two of the team members retreated at the last minute and we were lucky to find reserves. 5 in a team is substantially harder then 6 to keep up during 21,5 hours....

the changing rithm was that we devided in two groups of 3 - racing for 2 hours each, granting the others 2 hours to sleep, eat, etc. We did 2 laps of 2.27 km and then change.

All in all, we did 213 rounds this way. Due to the fact that only on saturday afternoon the track dried up, the fastest rounds were done late saturday-afternoon.

The whole event has brought more than 18.000 euro to the child-cancer-foundation.
