Default Wolverine Inline Marathon Report and Pictures

Jilleanne Rookard and Peter Doucet won a wet and wild marathon on Belle Isle in Detroit this morning at the second annual Wolverine Inline Marathon. The course was changed to eliminate a stretch of bad pavement and there were even safety pins this year at the registration desk, so all and all a great event with more skaters than last year despite the rainy weather.

Here are the winners. http://www.cdsdetroit.com/5-26-07-wo..._2514_JPG.html

Default Race Report & Pictures

We got up that morning to an overcast sky and the weather channel showing a big green glob over the western half of the state. So with great expectation we would get the race in before it rained we headed out to Belle Isle. As we opened the trunk to the car to put the skates, the first rain drops started and then it started to pour. So I quickly changed to a softer wheel in hopes of getting better traction, which seemed to work.

So we put our skates on and hung around on the porch of the Casino until the start. As we were waiting for the start our friend Speedy shows up with no skates and started wining about not wanting to get his pretty little boots wet. So he stood around under his umbrella staying dry.

Now we’re ready to go and boom the horn goes off and right out of the blocks people started falling. The front group got off to a good start and as the paced picked up the groups started to form. I was in the second group which was a good size until someone fell and split the group in two, luckily I was in the front group with Alan Marcosson, Cale Carvelle, Sarah from Toronto, Scott whom I had just met and few others but we started to loose people right away until it was just the 6 of us. Then I looked back and we had lost Alan and a little while later we lost Cale. All the while a big group was closing in on us.

The nice thing about a looped course like this is you could see the groups in front and back and you knew if you were gaining or losing ground and we were slowing loosing ground to the group behind us. So I kept the pace up with Sarah and Scott hoping to hang on but salvation came as we picked up Robert Piedra and Mechele Busby whom had dropped off the lead pack. So now we were five and now we started to put some distance between them and us. We picked up Herb Gale with one lap to go and it was about the same time the skies opened up and the rain was blowing sideways. Anyway this is the pack we finished up with.

Then we sat and froze for a while. I was shaking I was so cold, even after having two cups of hot chocolate. After finally warming up and the awards were handed out my buddy and I headed down to Indianapolis for the Indy 500 the next day.

I originally had on MPC VT Golds, but changed to Matter Greens. I had also skated a few miles on them so they were scuffed up a little.

how did those work Lenny? The 85a stargrips that I had on for the 10k in Elkhart were a total disaster. I'm looking for a wet weather wheel, but hoping to avoid the MPC because the 90's are built on an 80/84 hub. I might have to break down and get a wet weather frame like a 100/90 and use the MPCs.

The Matter Greens worked well. I had used them last year at Duluth and they worked well there too.

I used the MPC Gold VT's at Elkhart and they rolled well even over the rough areas.
