Default 2009 Disney Marathon ?

Could this be true?

Read this link.

Questionable. The Disney info center doesn't know anything about it, although that doesn't mean it'll not happen; Disney is a big place and perhaps someone somewhere there is working to set this up. The linked site doesn't give a date, which indicates the event is a maybe. The 2000 skater attendance figure is questionable since the last Disney Marathon was much less, as are have been all North/South American inline events this year. First publicity now isn't much lead time for such a big event. And if it were a real event, publicity elsewhere would be likely. The phone # listed (not a Disney #) apparently will not be available until 9 AM Monday, so we'll have to wait until then.

I did some digging this morning and concluded this tourism site simply regurgitated a previous year's event assuming it was still an annual event.

Too bad. I loved that race and I only got to do it once.

Which part did you love the most? The less than smooth parking lot or the more than wet boardwalk?

Sorry could not resist that one

But yes it was a fun race, even with the above less pleasant spots.

Will it come back? - only time will show us that I guess.

Often, certain things can be so bad that they're good. Disney is such example.

Disney is into making anything they do the best and profitable. It failed to live up to both those expectations. I'm sure there were hopes for European group skate numbers of recreational skaters attending. But their numbers continued to decrease rather than increase through the 5 years.

The venue's changing skate surfaces and set up was never going to be a favorite for speed skaters. A thunder storm race cancelation also "dampened" the prospects for future success.

The reality is there was more profit and a better venue for paint-ball and lacrosse (and of course, the major sports) than skating.

My greater disappointment is that nothing else has stepped up to fill the skating void in the Orlando area and that calendar slot.

So let's skate the Squiggy in Tampa in March and help it will grow into a major skating event. I know Jessica and Birget are working hard to make it happen, so...

We sure are!

Reserve the 2nd weekend in March (13-15) - hope to see lots of skaters there!
