Thanks for the link. I know I can be competitive in the Pro Masters Men (35-44) which I will be skating. Lets just say I can still run a 24 sec 200 meter and a 4:40 mile time. I like to think of myself in good shape for being 35 I am excited to strap on the skates again this year!!

You'll see 5K in the 9 minute range or less out of the advanced guys (about 3:00 pace)
5k = 3.1m. =< 3:00 pace will be my goal if conditions are good.
The pros will be pulling times way faster than that, 2:30s, maybe even lower.
if conditions are right.

Remember in that type of race, you are the power plant the whole time
sustaining that pace for that long seems easier than it is.
Weather, and terrain, surface conditions, are also factors.

I've learned that time, even in an advanced pack is really a product of how everyone in the pack races as much as anything else.
Everyone is working a lot harder in the advanced pack, I can assure you of that....

We're doing a 2 mile one for the pro series, which is basically a sprint for some of these guys most of the way.

Keep in mind, the mark is a 3:14 pace over 26 miles, not 5 miles - that's a big difference. And it's not a time trial, you're dealing with race dynamics too.

My suggestion would be to do some earlier races this year if you can before and see what happens. If you can't do that, at least try and do a marathon on your own and time it. That will be tougher than skating one in a pack since you'll pull yourself the whole way (unless you can arrange to do it with some training partners). You should be skating half marathons all the time, essentially (and then some) for training - time yourself for a half marathon and see what you get.

Tom,

Any idea on when they will get the par time charts up for the age group divisions ( I'll be in the rec). I wanted to know what I should be shooting for over last year's pace times......

No, I'll see if I can find out if they are even doing that. There was a lot of talk about the race at our meeting but that point wasn't discussed.

Couple questions:

What time is the 300 meter dash on Friday? I'll be driving over from indoor nationals so I'm trying to figure out if I should sign up for the tour thing. I'm skating novice at nationals on Friday so if it's not in the evening I probably wouldn't be able to make it.

Do the other events in the tour count towards overall placement? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, would I be losing out on anything by skating only the marathon?

Hey Jess... this is the pdf file for times...
http://www.allcommunityevents.com/gf..._of_events.pdf
It currently says 7 PM Friday.

From page:
http://www.allcommunityevents.com/gf..._pro_tour.html

"GFASF Pro Tour Schedule
Pro Category is recommended for skaters who skate a pace faster than ~3:14 min/mile for men and ~3:26 min/mile for female."

and lower on the page

"Pro Women- open to any participant who can skate a pace faster than ~3:15. Pro women races and heats will be combined with Pro Masters Women but separate from Men.

Pro Masters Women- open to any participant who can skate a pace faster than ~3:15."

I assume the lower part is typo.

Also

"Stage 1: 300 Meter Dash (Saturday, July 24, 2009)"

Another.

Thanks,
Renee

For anyone doing the Pro-Tour it seems the shorter two distances have changed. The 300m (which I think had originally been a 500m) sprint is now 160m's(???).

The 5k TT is now a 2 mile TT.

Does anyone know if there will be closer parking set aside for those in need of handicapped spaces? My 80+ year old grandma wants to come watch (very cool) but has difficulty walking long distances. What would be the best place to tell them to park so they can watch near the start/finish line? Or would it be possible for her to be dropped off there before the race starts?

Thanks

If the parking is the same as last year, if you get there soon enough you are basically parking right next to the course. I'm not sure if it has changed this year or not, but the main lot is right there, just make sure you get there early.

I believe the course is similar to last year's.. if that's the case, it is spectator-friendly being laps instead of point-to-point, so if it is too far to walk to the start and/or finish, I think your grandma will enjoy watching from any viewing point anyway, glad she is coming!

Thanks! From the map I think she can make it from the nearest parking lot.

No reports from Friday or today's 10k? I'm looking forward to the 1/2 tomorrow. Thunderstormed last night and supposed to tonight too, but also supposed to be nice in the morning.

Just got back, the race is still going on. It was a beautiful day today. Lots of top racers out there as well. For me, it was just the half marathon as I said. It was a small field and I had hopes of skating with the top pack but it was not to be.

I actually led out the race and pulled for most of the first couple miles, not necessarily on purpose, kind of ended up that way. The pace was 3:15ish, way, way too fast for me to last. When I tried to slow it down, someone else picked it up as we got to the first hills.

I made it on the lead pack for the first lap and as we came around the turnaround I was 2nd, so I had my moment of glory

Frankly the hills killed me. I'm just not in shape to be skating at race pace. The last mile before I blew up was like 3:08, and I was just done, and watched them skate away. Plus, the hills really did a number on my back, I was having a lot of issues there too.

After I blew up, my pace was actually 5 minutes for a couple miles.
Edit: Reviewed the results, not quite as bad as I thought at 49:50. The results are kind of messed up (I was not 2nd) but I think I was 8th.

But - it was good to see people. Saw Jess and Craig and Candy and finally met OI. I took lots of pics before my battery ran out after I was done.

I hung around for the starts of the pro races, which was great. They were just flying. Rainbo had some people in place to podium in all the races it seems, in fact Marcy Turek was leading out the women when I left. But there are some strong skaters there.

Unfortunately Cale took a fall on lap one and scraped himself up real good, he was done for the day.
