We paid for parking at Regionals and Gold Skate this year in Fresno.

The Selland Arena is big, so one thing I do know is there will be plenty of room. It's also going to be a busy weekend, especially if you watch all of the skating. Last year The first event Saturday was at 8am and the last finished at 11pm.

Gold Skate is a fun event and one that skaters, (and their parents) in the SWP Region should try at least once. It's open to all skaters, typically there are a few from other countries.
Bill

Which one is Selland Arena? The one where Regionals was held in or the one next to it? I don't recall the names.

The selland arena is the larger of the 2, its a full size arena with lots of seating. nice building although i havent been there since nationals 98. its to the left facing it of the smaller place.

Question Competition Details

I've heard a lot about this competition and the fact that they do some things differently than other competitions. I haven't been able to find any details about the events, judging and so forth.

Can someone provide details or a link?

Thanks.

Something interesting...
It has been at the Exhibit Hall (where worlds was held in 2004) for the past 7 years. Unless there was a mistake in the posting, it will be held in the Selland Arena a much larger venue next year.

I'll see some of you there!

Hi Joe,

Results from last year are here... and you can see what events are being skated...

http://www.usarollersports.org/vnews.../45dc7b39cd4e6

The "GoldSkate Classic" is a Roller Skating Show Competition. It is comprised of primarily of skaters for rollerskating clubs in the South West region, (CA, NE, AZ) but has included skaters from all over the world. It is scored on showmanship, choreography, costuming, and music. Stage lighting and spotlights are used to enhance the performances. GoldSkate is an event where technical merit often takes a back seat to creativity and delivery. The judges selected are people who are not involved in the skating community. If a qualifying performance is required, the judges for the qualifying rounds will different for the final event. The performances are scored using the following guidelines.

60% Content, 25%Costume, 15% Music

Thanks. Ok the judges may be regular folks.

Does the level of jumps or spins count at all or is it the whole overall picture? In otherwords everything else being equal would they give higher points to a double jump than a single?

I do realize some people might not be able to distinguish between the jumps.

Joe

Everything else equal and same jump, doubles would look better and count more (I guess). In reality... everything else is never equal
Gold Skate is a showmanship competition and skaters of all levels can feature their favorite items which are not part of a "standard" program.

Here are some video clips I took in 2002,
Heather Mulkey's Ladies singles
Glendale's Group Number

Here are some photos I took from last years Gold Skate (2007)...

Here's a link to my Gold Skate page...

Heathers program in the video was more of a competition program to me then a gold skate one.

Rick,
You are correct, again Heather did win that year, she's a tough skate to follow. At Gold Skate many of the single programs are competition programs. To me that's what makes something different, and well skated, stand out.
Here's are a couple of examples, there are more that come to mind... but I haven't seen them online...
RWC's production number. http://youtube.com/watch?v=0y4gNl9ju4s

and here's one of my favorite singles program that's more "Gold Skate-ish"

Bill thanks for the videos, cool. yes heather was great, she had a very cheated mapes and toe walley, we always called them toe axels when she did them. but she was still very good and the best at that time. when she retired she was still gold or silver material at worlds. dont think she would have beat tanya but u never know for sure if she kept working. i was sad when she tried to come back and became very ill and was hospitalized. have you heard how she is doing or anything??? i wish her nothing but the best. i remember the first time i saw her when she skated wc and was a freshman, just a little skinny 12 or 13 year old and we all knew then what would happen later and it did.

What I have noticed is the type of Goldskate routines for some of these competitors in Nationals and even in past worlds. Just by viewing their choice in music to the upper body movements and also including their choice in styles in outfits. Much alike Goldskate or show quality skating. Is the protocol now for Nationals and Worlds? Please remember that for me it has been over 20 yrs since seeing the style of skating. Even more than 20 yrs to be honest.

Heather's:
The point on the cheated mapes and so on was true, but far from not being as bad as some of the others cheated at the beginning and then the end... with even 360 degrees on the ending. A three turn is one thing but seeing two three turns such as double jump then to backward to forward then calling that a triple with a 180 degree take off beginning is where I have to get off.

Now that is something I did not know. So he is a coach only? Who holds the medal for WC inline mens singles from last year?
