Default Plate snap

I guess this is one of the dangers of old skates. I had a plate break while I was cruising. There was no warning at all. I took one bounce off of the concrete and then did a barrel roll until I stopped. No injury, just a big WTF moment followed by sadness in losing my old friends. They were not especially good (single action, ≈12 degree “Chicago” plates), but after 31 years they felt like extensions of my feet, so familiar. I might have noticed a crack if I had checked the plates before skating, but who does that? And I’m not sure if a crack would have been visible. Anyway, I can’t be too upset because we had such a long run.

Judging by the look of the pivot pin and the cup. It would seem like the pivot pin effectively jack hammered its way into the plate to the point where it initiated the cracking process.
