On any number of bearing threads it is very predictable who will chime in with specific perspectives about lubrication or 'speed'. I'm tired of hearing that.

The thread is about personal relationships in sports. My ruining my wife's bearings was the vehicle for opening the discussion.

Option 1) The honest option. Hey dear, I trashed your bearings. I'm working on a replacement set for you. Do you have any specific wants?

Option 2) [This is a hard one to pull off, but if done well, make you look like a hero. If not, you crash and burn hard. The odds are probably 10:1 for crash and burn.]
Hey dear, I thought we should upgrade your bearings for Christmas and I've got a set of ceramics coming, just for you. (This is usually met with suspicion and squinty eyes - trying to figure out what the angle is...)

Option 3) Hmm dear. Your bearings seem a bit crusty. I'm going to swap you out for some others and get some new ones. [If she's not a gear fanatic, she probably won't ask exactly how they got crusty, and you don't have to grovel too much.]

Option 3 is probably the one I'd go for, since I'm not ballsy enough to try #2, and #1 could be less than fun.

[But my wife won't skate. She sees me losing enough skin, often enough, that it simply doesn't look all that appealing. So, I don't think I'll ever have your dilemma.]

Option 4 like cass38a said... just swap bearings and keep my mouth shut! Since I keep all our gear in shape (bicycles, skis, snowboards, ice skates, inline skates) it would be easy enough to just swap in a set of different bearings already on hand and she'd never know. (she never does...)

Anyway... anybody else do something boneheaded and wreck someone else's equipment?

Give her your best bearings and then you go to the resale shop that has used kids inlines in the skate box. Find the cleanest neglected pair in the crate. Spin the wheels and pick a couple of pairs for $2-3 a pair.... good to go as long as you dont get the ultra crap bearings with the built in bearing spacer/bearing race setup.
