A really great song that was played alot at our rink was "Shake your Pants" by Cameo. It was a good mix of speed and shuffle.

strangely enough, 19 by Paul Hardcastle and not so strange, supersonic by JJ Fad were played for quite a while as the speed skate songs at our rink

Either I'm just "THAT OLD"....or for me it was a song called "Wipeout" by The Ventures!!!! Ha! LOL We speed skated to that song every session.

Also..."You've got another thing coming" by Judas Priest really got us moving.

Oh, I almost forgot..."Whip-it" by Devo really rocked.

Fast Skates - I was a rink manager and we knew that if we played anything by AC/DC during the fast skate, the owner would hold us directly responsible for any injuries....but we did it anyway. My favorite? "Back in Black". Other songs would do though. I still get goose bumps big enough to tie ropes around when I hear REO Speedwagons "Keep on Rollin".

Jam Skates - Cameo's "Word Up"

Just remembered a few more....

"Dirty Laundry" by Don Henly

"Rock of Ages" by Def Leppard - "Rock of ages, still rollin' Rock-n-rollin" I still love that song.

"Run to the hills" by Iron Maiden

re: AC/DC, yeah, just about ANY one of their songs would do it. Wouldn't be surprised if everytime you played "you shook me" SOMEONE went down because they got distracted when they HAD to smack their thighs during the lines "... those American thighs". LOL Good times. Good times.

Seems that the current favorite AC/DC skating song is Thunderstruck.

I personally liked Sammy Hagar's "I Can't Drive 55."

The song I remember from back in the day was...Jungle Love by Steve Miller. As soon as you heard that whistle, everyone knew it was time to haul a$$.

What, no mention of Funky Town (Lipps Inc.)? That was very popular when I first started speed skating. It was played more than once every Friday and Sat. night at my local rink. Not a true fast skate song, but skaters did tend to pick up speed when it was played.

A few other "oldies":

* Flirtin' with Disaster - Molly Hatchet (definitely a fast skate song - already mentioned, but worth mentioning again )
* Working for the Weekend - Loverboy
* On the Loose - The Tubes

Just to name a few...

No doubt. It's hard to convey how awesome it was at my rink as a kid. It could be described as almost a "burnout", or "head(using the parlance of the time)" rink. All the old 70's and 80's rock, black rock t-shirts, perv moustaches, and combs in the back of the jeans. Rap was just creeping in to the scene so there were some good break-dance/early hip-hop songs too.
The top 40, and new rap played at the rink now is truly a let down for anyone who grew up skating, and that one song came on that made everyone look at each other and just go nuts!
