Two words: Electric buff !!

The 'stuff in a tube' was probably a cutting/polishing compound - you can try car polishes, toothpaste, 'silvo', or see a proper metal polishing firm for a dab of something specifically engineered for aluminum.

Back in the day, always had good success with Mothers Aluminum wheel polish, still available in fine auto supply stores nationwide.

Simichrome comes in a tube and works great.

"Product Description
Simichrome is said to be "absolutely the best metal polish in the world", and satisfied customers everywhere agree. Simichrome is guaranteed to put a shine on brass, chrome, silver, gold, aluminum, glass and plastic. Just apply a small amount of Simichrome and polish with a clean cloth, then wipe off excess and buff to a brillant luster with a clean, soft cloth."

I've always used Eagle One Nevr-Dull Wadding Polish. It's safe to use all on all metals and I like it better than Mothers or any of the other auto products. You can get it at most any automotive store. I use it on my Pro-Lines and it makes them shine like they did when they were brand new.

http://www.whitediamondpolish.com/faq.html

There are a few local polishing guys that use White Diamond polish to polish sportbike frames. They start with a stock frame and in a few hours, they strip it and polish it to a mirror finish. Amazing stuff.
