There are a handful of ways.

You can do a 'T-Stop', which is a move where you place the arch of one foot crossways againtst the heel of the other and drag the wheels sideways to slow down. It takes some practice, especially if you want to stop quickly. You also have to be mindful of your wheels, as you can flat spot them, although I've never had an issue with that.

You can 'plow stop', similar to skiing, where you spread your feet apart and turn the toes inward and slide a little on each foot. This isn't terribly feasible on grippy speed/jam wheels or on a really nice floor.

You can do a 'duck walk' stop where you turn your toes inward similar to a plow stop, but you alternate stepping with your left and right. This takes practice, especially because you need a weight shift to really make it work.

Failing all else, just crash into the wall. That'll stop you.

You forgot the classic turn backwards and just spin in circles until your momentum is gone

If you have slippery wheels you can hockey stop...but I don't recommend it.

If all else fails put on some pads like us derby girls and do the baseball slide

Default toe starts

they should be called toe starts because thats all a speed skater uses them for. practice your tee stops and a backwards duck walk with your toe stops on. untill you get it figured out. then take them off. leave them on for now! it should only take you a session or two to get it! then pull them off. be carefull it's easy to forget there missing at first.

Hi jamsk8girlXD,

In addition to what's been said, if your Stops are adjustable (up and down), then I suggest that you run them all the way up (if you're not there already), and run them for a few sessions practicing the T-Stop - or what ever method works for you, before ditching them entirely. Best to practice/master your stoping in other ways, before you go with-out Stops. IMHO

Once you ditch the Stops, put on Toe-Plugs to prevent your skate from damaging the floors.

I run Stops at less than a 1/4" from the floor, but almost never use them to stop. I use the T-Stop both forward and backward, and with either leg. My stops are used for jumps, spins, some foot work, and sprinting.

Default Toe stops?

Hi guys, here in Australia toe stops are not used, I thought they were for taking off!
Hockey stop is the way of choice, chuck it sideways n pray, the harder the wheel the better just be committed to slide. it makes a pretty scary noise though.

If by "scary" you mean "sexy", then you are correct!
