I'm trying to understand more about the history of roller skating in the United States and I'm trying to remember what people have told me about the origins of USARS (United States Amateur Roller Skating Association aka USA Roller Sports).
I think someone told me that at one time RSA (Roller Skating Association International) or one of its predecessors was the U.S. governing body for roller skating, but because of Olympic Committee concerns about conflict of interest, a new U.S. roller skating federaiton was founded, known today as USA Roller Sports. I believe the conflict of interest issue was related to the fact that RSA was a trade organization for commercial roller rink operators. Is that true? Does anybody know anything more about U.S. roller skating history during the period of time when USARS was founded? - Kathie |

Sorry to dredge an old thread up, but my father enlightened me. Apparently USARS was spun off from the RSROA (Roller Skating Rink Operators Association) somewhere around the late 70's early 80's.

In the early '70's the two competitive organizations merged. One of them was a spinoff of the RSROA. The new organization was the United Stated Amateur Confederation of Roller Skating or USAC. It controlled the competitive side and the RSROA controlled the tests and judges commissions. The current organization is apparently USAC with a name change.

That is the way I understand it. USAC became USARS. I know in the art skating world, USAC tests are recognized by USARS, USARS even has most of USAC's records and documentation, but it is not quite complete. Recently, we had a skater that almost got the boot when she tried to compete in a "beginner" level event when she had placed at nationals in a more advanced event under USAC many years ago. |
