There are rec cyclists just like rec skaters. Both just putt around, some break a sweat and some don't. If you are a serious speed skater then take on an equally fit road cyclist. I can cruise in a pace line on a bike at 28mph for a couple of hours. Cyclist fitter than I can cruise at over 30 in a group. I can sprint over 40mph on my road bike. Pros sprint over 50. If you want to take on cyclist pick on ones at your own fitness level and see what happens.

As most of the speed skaters here are also avid cyclists I'd venture to guess the word troll comes to mind ...and burns in

Now since I opened my mouth, my favorite cycle thought is being at Acadia Park in ME on a horse(16.3 hand foxtrotter) at a trot on a carriage trail, cresting a hill on a corner and meeting six bikers from the other direction, they all just rode off the trail into the woods and it was (to me) one of the funniest things I've ever witnessed. As an avid road cyclist myself I garnered great entertainment value.

Then there was the time in LA at Venice while headed north on the strand on a road bike I had a roller skater who had just turned and looked at me skate into my path, I hit her with my body not my bike, and I grabbed her head so it wouldn't hit the ground or get throttled around, my front wheel pretzel-ed and I was 15 miles away from home...Got the wheel straight, the woman rolled away, I wobbled home.

I was pacing behind a road bike doing laps around the Rose Bowl. He was texting, that is how I caught him for the draft. Like the good sport he was once he noticed me and put down the phone and peddled hard for a few seconds until we lost suction the he slowed and continued to text.

I took the hint and wished him a flat!

I would never do that. If you got on my wheel you earned it....but, 2 wheels or 8 wheels if you see my flick my elbow you better take a pull or I'll drop you like a bad habit...lol!

I had to look it up, but yes, without a doubt, you nailed me!

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response..."

I would only take issue with the off-topic piece...I'm trying to provoke the inner skater in you to give the inner cyclist the "whut fer!"

:-)

one of my fave experiences is with the triple tandems. Don't see 'em too often but they make great draft... And, yeah, right about the time you're nicely settled in the draft there comes the familiar sound "clickity, click, click" of gears as they try to pull away. Man, I just got in there to rest, I don't want to have to chase to catch back up.

I very seldom chase down bikes, though I hear its one of the best ways to train at high speeds. I've had a couple bikes in the last couple weeks pace off of me for a while and when they finally decide to pass me say, "dude, do you know you're doing 18 mph". Alwasy a nice ego stroke.

OMG, I don't even know where to begin! This is what I live for!

Have a lot of stories but the best cycling stalk/chase/pass/smoke fun is when you have a group of them with one or two slower newbies in the group along with the skinsuited types. I like to try to egg the fast guys to break rank and come after me. The ones that stay loyal back with the slower ones go crazy. You can tell they are being tortured. I would even say things like "your not going to let a fat rollerblader pass you, are you?"
I'm so mean, but it sure gets your HR going when the chase is on.

I like to catch up and pace the cyclists. I don't get close and don't draft. I either make a clean pass or stay back. Sometimes exchange some conversation with them. I've met quite a few cyclist that way.

One time I was passing an elderly couple on bikes. I called out..."passing on your left" The gentleman swerved to the right and crashed into the lady. They both fell down. They looked OK, I guess, so I just kept going.

Oh...did I mention I'll be out on my road bike this evening surveying the trail I'm going to skate 140 continuous miles on tomorrow?

Ouch! Bummer - I hate to see people go down and/or get hurt on the trail, but sometimes it happens, and once or twice it's been me. At least you announced yourself. It probably would have happened either way - announcement or not!

I have no elitest skating or biking stories.
I do however have a distinct distaste for testosterone fueled knuckle draggers behind the wheel, who think it's amusing to get as close to a person on a bike as they can without actually hitting them.

The one who left dirt on my leg from rubbing up against me with his scrotum-mobile -found out just how much he didn't amuse me when I caught up to him at the next stop light. He's probably still telling his group of circle jerk cronies about the crazy bitch that kicked that nice deep dent in his passenger side door with her heel. I know it certainly knocked that stupid "I got you" sh1t eating grin off his face that he had when I first rode up next to him.

adrianm,

If you can name me one pro who can sprint(non-downhill) over 50 mph I'll buy you a racing bike of your choice. What a stupid thread.

So far I like Smartin's scrotum-mobile story the best.
