Default Music for your Session.. what would you bring to the rink?

Well, the title says enough... What music do you bring to your session and beg the DJ to play... or.. what "jams" do you love hearing at the rink? (Seperate thread from songs involving skating)

I personally like

You Dropped The Bomb On Me ~ Gap Band
Thriller ~ Michael Jackson
Billy Jean ~ Michael Jackson
Rappers Delight ~ Sugar Hill Gang
Get Down On It ~ Kool and the Gang
Hollywood Swingin ~ Kool and the Gang

(I realize this is not a new thread idea.. so dont post links to similar threads, i have read them)

I'm at risk of being banned from these forums for saying this, so I'll say it only once: 80's music. Yes, the era of big hair, shoulder pads, leg warmers, skinny leather ties and the groom mullet. I don't care! 80's music rocks like no other - please consult Wayne's world or any John Hughes film before you disagree :-)

Default Keep Adding for an OLDie

Hi Mike,

OK If I go tonight I will try to bring back some names of my favorites.

In age, I am way past wanting to remember all these new names and artists, yet I should know the songs that are just fun for me or others. I mean other than the "Lion King", YMCA by the Village People.

Some skaters I know hate Michael Jackson's songs ONLY because his were played often at their skate rink in New Hampshire.

Back later since this is one of my TO DO's I keep on not doing.

Default Age and Skating Age Co-Dependency

Hi Again,

Merlin raises an interesting point. Music that one loves to skate to, is age and skating age dependent.

Last year several of us older skaters went to skate on a Top 40 night with the youth crowd and lost interest totally. All the while the young gals and guys were enjoying themselves with some doing a shaking kind of dance like all those gals in the current videos.

Once a great guy skater probably of Merlin's fancy came to adult skating and he couldn't stand one single song. He wanted the 80s and never came back.

And then we have our Country and Western afficianados.

Yours in Skating, MA/NY Dave

Lot's of good new R&B today, that's why I'd rather have the younger kids DJ.

For a older mix...

Careless Whisper by Wham was a good slow song.

Most of the old songs have been over played some I don't mind skating too are...
"RAID" Lakeside
"Go Deep" Janet Jackson
"Funkin for Jamaica" Tom Browne (or Mirah's remix)
"Skin tight" and others , Ohio Players
"Get Down" Toni Tony Tone
"Knee Deep"Parliament (or the BEP's remix)
"Beat Goes On" Whispers
"Dusic" Brick
"Joy Stick" Dazz
"Love and Happiness" Al Greene
"Midas Touch" , "Wet My Whistle" Midnight Star
"Lovely Day / Players holiday" Bill Whithers
"Lookin for you/Haven't you Heard" Franklin/Rushen

and the list goes on....

Man that's Harsh Jim
I like it because it's a light upbeat song....fun to skate to.

I use to like skating to the Gloria Gaynor song: I Will Survive
but ever since the movie the Replacements I can only laugh everytime I hear it

precisely what i was looking for, although.. dont hold back on the newer stuff.. as much as id never admit it in person, justin timberlake ~ sexy back has a killer beat. Fergie~Fergilicious another fav.

I do agree, some of the older stuff may get a bit tedeious to listen to.. but (forgive the political incorrect-ness).. im a white boy.. my dance moves are about as good as my singing voice (tonedeaf)... i need to latch onto a beat just to make it look good.. and, atleast at my local rink.. the chart toppers there playing now have zero beat.

If i was just to skate around a listen to music i agree with Merlin on the 80's music. 80s pop, or rock.. heck.. even some early dre and snoop. I would probably throw in a CD mixed with Dokken, Winger, Warrant, Motley Crue (you get the direction im headed)

Bear in mind, im a product of the 80's, that should have been born 15years previous.. Led Zeppelin, The Who.. ect.. all i listen to.

70's and 80's funk and new wave (much of which has been listed in this thread) including "Jam On It" by Newcleus (wikki-wikki) and "Situation" by Yazoo among others.

DANG It!! I stopped skating tonight a few times just to ask someone the title and artist for the song that many of us find lots of fun to skate fast and skate in chains. Lots of guy/doll fun in our rythmn skating whether fast or slow and easy-street.

Anymore, like Martin Luther who created great Church music from secular music in his age, I could care less about the lyrics or the message in most songs. It is the dance or rythmn music that makes the magic when you are doing double time or skating with the beat. Sometimes the lyrics do help with relationship mentals like the 2nd song yet mostly the lyrics are ignored for the music and the beat.

"Crazy" by Narls Barkli or Barkley
http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/song/670396.html
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At-aFCDCQXE

Gosh this last clip reminded me of my band playing days as a boy

"Last Night" by Diddy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvrDM3CFBIw

"Get it Shawty" by Lloyd
http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1556743&vid=137893

Note: I found it interesting how mtv allows advertisers to gain the fist 15 seconds.

"White Lines" by Grand Master
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jxYI...elated&search=

^ I got to the above by first going to v
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6e9G-ump3Y
and then going down to White Lines
^ Why GWBush is on youtube as a bash I have no idea.
^ Most likely someone is being creative. So ignore the pictures
^ and listen to the music.

Note: I had a hard time finding a music clip for White Lines so this is all that time has allowed. I don't like GWB since 9/12 yet that is a separate issue to great skating.

"Give it to me" by Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yei5jFdyCFo

^ a violation of copywrite I guess so v-v is a replacement

Back Later as I update this note, placing additions above this note.

Tomorrow night; hopefully, I will have some new skate tunes to add to your tread. Since it is adult night I will miss some other great stuff that I like that is played for the teens or young youth like Disney and Lion King stuff.

I do recognize the name of some of the artists you all posted, including your (Mike's) starting post, yet don't know if I like all these tunes for MY skating.

What would be helpful is a link to the actual song for anyone who posts a "love that song"

Mike, I do want to thank you for this tread....

Default Additions-2

Hi Mike, aka MikesHonda,

Nothing too exceptional on the music front from this past Thursday's Skateland(Bradford, MA) adult skate. One or two or more good songs yet nothing memorable. Our DJ, the owner, controls the tempo and is the song master. He mixes things up always, which maybe is good, yet sometimes a yawn for some of us.

So I am going to add my agreement with other posters when I find agreement.

=== MikesHonda========+=====================
"Get Down on It" by: Kool and The Gang

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_2m-4e4tyA

One of yours that has a good rythym, sound, and a beat for single or double time, that I have skated to...

"You dropped a bomb on me" by: The Gap Band

http://youtube.com/watch?v=0Nn-f2uCSNY

^ I think this is the song you listed in your original post. I got the link via working on Brikkee's post later in this tread.

-------------------------------------------------------
Minor Agreement (Not so good for me, yet maybe OK for others)

"Hollywood Swingin" by: Kool & The Gang

"Jive Talkin" by: The Bee Gees

"Jump" by:Van Halen

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e-vgQSqNtA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmfrPrN1L_s

^ I like the song yet one of the problems I have in skating to this is the junk
music that is near the end since it breaks the rythmn. It is like you are
skating great and then you have to stop for the music guy to get his act
back together.

Slowly above ^^^ I will edit this note and add, SINCE I need to learn this stuff.

this is a little offtopic but... Have any of youtried Pandora radio at Pandora.com? Netradion that keys off songs or artists you input to create a themed station. I just startted one with skating music (some of the same stuff y'all are naming can't wait to hear how it works.

Oh and I lake the 80's stuff too.. even Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, A Flock of Seagulls, had good dance tunes. Most of the soundtrack to Vally girl was good.

J.Geils Band - "Freezeframe", "Centerfold"
Depeche Mode - "Master and Servant"
Van Halen - "Jump", "Panama"
Rick Springfield - "Love is alright tonight"
Shalamar - "Circumstantial Evidence"
DJ Cool - "Let me Clear my throat"
George Clinton - "Get Dressed"
ZZ Top - "Sharp Dressed Man"
Blondie - "Rapture", "Heart of Glass"
Parliment - "Flashlight"
Bananarama - "Robert Deniro's waiting"
Falco - "Rock me Amadeus"
Cutting Crew - "Don't Look Back"
