Seems like a neat event, but I'm surprised at how poorly it has been promoted... a myspace page? That's like trying to read spaghetti. They have a domain and yet all that is on there is a pdf form.

Also, the marathon is on a Monday - so I can't imagine they'll get too much travel interest in the race.

Well the Pro's start at 7:30AM and must finish by 9:00 AM. Then the open begins. Thats me, I'm open.
BWI-Open-Sheldon.
So I might just be skating solo, if nobody shows up. Makes it easier getting awards when there is no competition.

Monday is a National Holiday, so I guess that makes sense..but the lack of publicity makes it seem like they aren't interested in anyone outside their inner sanctum. Where have I seen that before?

Ah, its MLK day - well, I don't get that off, and few people that I know do either.

What other event are you referring to that didn't seem to want to draw outside local skaters?

It is very bizzare, the myspace with that rap crap...

I registered to do the road course events - the 1500 M and 10K. I figured that I couldn't handle those two plus the marathon.

Hey maybe if we all just pick one event we will all have our chance at glory :-)

Hehe, sounds like your going. I don't think the $65 would be the deal breaker, hehe.

But I am thinking about some deal, maybe a bet or something. Hehe.

Sheldon, I really hope you're not making this your only Florida trip this year. It would break my heart if you chose Miami over Squiggy.

No you're right Jim..it is typical and average in our sport.

And... that's a problem. It aggravates me that we cannot even market our own events effectively to our OWN people. How can we attract new people to the sport when we aren't any good at informing the core?

I realize not everyone is a marketing genius or can build a good website, so that's probably part of the issue. I think they've done some promoting on the Inline Planet forums - that's good, but what about the people here? Not everyone reads both forums.

I'm not saying I have the answers, since I don't. I'm just pointing out this is an issue our sport faces and we need to solve it.

Maybe one thing I could do would be to build a web site template for skate events, free for everyone to use. I'll put that on my to-do list.

Remember that the marathon is an add-on to an existing indoor event. There are 200+ people going to the indoor event. There are a heck of a lot of indoor racers in the S/SE regions of USARS and more of them do outdoors than us Pacific Northwesters.
