Default Aust/NZ skating coach dies.

There will be many who remember Mark Lind, many who will not know him. He lived in NZ and Australia and taught in many places, and many, many students who competed at worlds (including me for four years). He also competed in them too, maybe be known to many as Gregory Mark Lind.

Mark passed away lastnight in his home country of NZ and apparently died of heart attack. He was only seen at the nationals last week. Mark was also the vice president of IRSTA for several years when Urina Ribbons (spelling?) was President.

Jay, Thanks for the info. I met Mark with Burton. Very nice fellow. Please give the family and your federation our sympathies.

I'll email Burton the info.

Jayson sorry to hear about Mark, another coach has passed away, seems like we lost so many this past year.

I've never met any of Mark's family. Nor have I seen him for many, many years. We lost contact after he stopped teaching me in 1990. He was my coach for five years.. After that, there was no contact. But thank you for responding.

Jayson i guess it comes with time but we are losing too many hall of fame coaches all over the world. so many champions and so much knowledge is lost with them. of course their students can pass on what was taught to them by those coaches.

Sorry to hear about this. Do you know of any coaches he has mentored? I fear that as we lose great coaches, we may not have others who can "step up to the plate." I hope he has others who can carry on for him. This is surely a loss to those whom he coached, as well as his family and friends.

Lin, in Australia in the late 80's Mark taught basically everyone in QLD, NSW and VIC who was on 'anyone'.. The list is endless. Many still coaching today. Too many who just faded away. The saddest thing about our sport is many of the GREATEST skaters just disappear. It's devistating, not have their knowledge and experiences passed on is such a shame for our other skaters.

Agree with you Jason re past skaters vanishing once their skating careers are over.

I was fortunate enough to spend time with Mark several years back and gained a lot from that time.

A tragic loss.

Default Re:Aust/NZ skating coach dies.

Mark was my coach from 1980 to 1982. He was a great coach who brought out the best in all his charges. I was 12 when he came to my club and at the time I was too young to appreciate what a world class coach was.

It was sad to hear of his passing. I was priveleged to have him as my coach and mentor. I remember having club get togethers at my place and he was always the last to leave, sharing his stories with mum and myself and what I had to look foward to as "a good skater, Craigie" as he put it.

My condolences go out to his family and those he has helped over the years. The skating world lost a great man.
