Where? Gold Coast, Queensland. 1hr drive South of Brisbane, or 1hr flight north from Sydney.

Venue? Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium. Shown in the bottom right of the picture, details are at the bottom of the page. This is the same venue as the one used for the 1999 World Championships.

Website? Not sure of anything official at this stage however I'm guessing it will be linked to from the Skate Australia site.

Anyone thinking of going? Yes.

Mal.

Thanks for the reply's. They are a big help.
I thought the Gold Coast was a region, and was looking for it on the wrong side of the continent

A few skaters in my club are think of making the trip as a vacation and to watch some of the skaters we know, and of course, all the other skaters.

I hope Kathie will provide some additional area FAQ's

Thanks Again,
Bill

The US dollar will more than likely be pretty strong against our Aussie dollar so that's even more reason for you guys to flock down here in droves. You know about the new events going in? Solo Dance in jnr (2 compulsories and a solo freedance), mini show groups (up to 12 skaters I think). Should make for an exciting comp.

with all these 'new' events, dare I ask... how are they going to fit the program in to the same amount of scheduled days as any other championships??? worlds will go for 3weeks soon.. who has 3wks to take off work (for all us normal folk!) to see worlds.. pitty the coaches who have skaters in junior at one end, and senior at the other!

very good point Jayson,,,the same thing happened to our nationals, from 8 days which was great to 3 weeks which is nuts.

There was a mail out brochure from Skate Australia towards the end of last year, it has details of an event company taking package bookings,

http://www.nextevent.com.au/ , then click on skating championship on the left menu.

It also promoted a web address of www.2007worldartchampionships.org.au which doesn't work yet. I really don't understand the theory behind producing and mailing out a full colour double A4 size brochure directing people to a web site that doesn't work but anyway, keep an eye on it, it must go live at some stage.

I'm curious what the official schedule is going to look like. Hopefully it's not 3 weeks long!

Unhappy Programme

The programme they handed out at Spain was only listed for two weeks with it all nicely fitted in - although they've still managed to do some events whereby the competitors are competing last in the late evening and then practicing first the next morning - don't quite understand that one

that happens all the time, just ask the poor dance skaters.. even in spain this happened... seriously, if they cut down the amount of training, they could shorted then entire championship by about 4days.. We go there to COMPETE, not practice.. give them a run through then bang.. get out there and do it.. I think there is far too much training time.. even 2hrs for figures is ludicrous.. (lets not start an attack from the figure gang here) and all the program run throughs ... are they really necessary? I'm sure this has been mentioned many a time before, and I thought Australia might have had the sense to go a little left wing this year, but not.... (sadly) and we are stack in that hole Cararra... seriously, there are a dozen better places it could have been.. and why the gold coast AGAIN??

Brisbane QLD 1975
Sydney NSW 1991
Gold Coast QLD 1999
Gold Coast QLD 2007

WHAT ABOUT MELBOURNE, PERTH OR ADELAIDE??

Melbourne just hosted the Comm Games and we have sensational sporting venues, ones smaller than used in Spain that would be perfect .. it makes me so angry.. partly it is because the Federation office is in QLD and most of the organizing committee.. and they are all lovely people, but I just cant stand the Gold Coast!

Jayson good points on the skating practice and time involved with it. they should just have an official practice that lasts one day with everybody getting a feel for the floor or surface and then do competition. thats how we do it in the usa for nationals and it works good. they have the practice during the day and then start nationals that evening. the skaters dont need 4 days of practice, they been doing it all year. get the competition on.

as far as the venue in australia, could it be costs for the reason its on the gold coast. which place would be the best for flying in, airports, hotels, transportation to and from the venue?/

Not the Gold Coast. Unless you are coming from New Zealand on a Low Cost Carrier there are no non-stop or even direct flights to the closest airport to the Gold Coast (OOL) So if you want to fly into OOL then you have to get a connection at (most likely) SYDney or MELbourne, and again this must the a low cost carrier (I do believe that there is 1 full service flight per week).

Otherwise if you fly into Brisbane (BNE) then you must travel by bus, hirecar etc. Brisbane is within 1 hour of the Gold Coast, there are direct & non-stop flights from LAX, if travelling from Europe there are no direct flights. You must either change flights at one of the Asian transits, or continue you flight to Australia and then make your connection in SYD or MEL.

On another note, the skaters who used the venue last week reported that the floor was slightly slippery, however it did improve whilst they were there. They would have been using Roll-line Grease, Roll-line New Dance wheels or v.similar.

exactly my point .. not only is that venue like a bin, its a zillion degrees in there with NO AIR/CON... can you believe that! the seating is all down one end, (the majority of it) and that is at the long end... a little on each side, but one side is for athletes, the other the cut off for VIP etc.. always empty on both accounts and looks terrible...

Getting in to the GC is a pain... flying directly in to any other major Australian city is PERFECTLY simple! The venue is simply not what I call world standard.. the floor is the same as it was in 1999.. no different.. and Cararra is not a great area, remember last time, the skaters getting their skates STOLEN out of the cars in the car park!!! Hello!!

I might sound like I'm on a downer here, but hey.. if people think having a worlds in a town where the Beach is the main attraction, then you got it all wrong...

There are much nicer venues in the Gold Coast alone. Cararra is a fair distance from anything useful such as shops to buy anything decent to eat, and hotels. It would be v.interesting to know how much it would be to hire a good venue for 4 or 5 days (for a shortened worlds as previously mentioned) than a poor venue for 2 weeks.

Thank You Malcom and Jayson for all the feedback, especially about the venue. With a little luck I'll see you all there, get to watch some skating, and do some sight seeing!
