I know this is kind of inline with the other thread relating to outfits & costumes, but could people please give me their opinions on which diamante to use. I am about to start decorating outfits for this years competitions and Im unsure of which stones to use.
1) Sew-On Diamante Although I understand the idea of these, in that you can reuse them constantly, the selection of colours & prices is making these my last option I think... 2) Hot-Fix Diamante I have used these many times in the past and although cheaper & with a fantastic effect & colour range, I have seen them fall off outfits way too many times. 3) Glue-On Diamante These seem a fab option and my only hesitation is that I have never used them before. Does the glue hold well? How do you approach glue-ing them on? Do you think it is a more worthwhile approach? Please give me some advice on these as I am hoping to start soon but am unsure what to do. Bex |

This is the route most people I know in skating in the states go. They use glue on rhinestones(diamante). The swavorski seem to have the best glitter to them.

I don't use hotfix, I use E6000, which you can buy in most fabric stores. For the most part, the stones stay on. The one drawback is that although the stones can be removed (with some doing, LOL) and reused, the fabric of the costume they are being removed from is toast.
Here's what I do: I sit at my desk and hang the dress on a hanger from the light fixture so it's right at eye level. The tube of E6000 sits in a jar to hold it upright and I use a plastic sewing needle to apply the glue to the stones. When I finish a row or pattern of stones, I whip out the hair dryer and aim it at the stones I just applied. The heat makes the glue dry faster. |

We also use E6000. To remove the stones we baste the outfit into a pillowcase, then stitch the opening closed. Take to a drycleaners and ask for the 'old fashioned' dry cleaning solution and to NOT open the case. The stones fall off the outfit and leave no residue. All you have to do is wash it to get rid of the cleaning solution smell. No need to buy more stones as they are ready to be used again.
In our town, we have a cleaners that all we have to say is that it is a skating costume with rhinestones on it and they know what we want. The reason we baste it into one side of the case is that we have found that it may get wadded up in the bottom of the case and the solution misses some stones.

Hey Bex!
I've used both hot fix and glue on stones.... I find it depends largely on how much time you have, and to some degree, your budget! Here, hot fix are more expensive and also harder to get. BUT - have saved my life at times when I've been racing against the clock to get outifts finished! If you glue them on yourself, i find generally they stay attached better... although all types of rhinestones drop off from time to time I've found. I love the hot-fix cause they are so fast, and you can move around so quickly with them - but like you say, sometimes not as many options with them... I have also used some of the really large stones that need sewing on... which give a great effect... and since they are so big, (and cost a fortune) you can sometimes use these in combination with the smaller glue on/hot fix ones for a great effect. Good luck sweetie! (Costume decoration is so much fun....) Rach |

we use to use a syringe to apply the glue, you can get them at a drugstore and usually for free, less mess that way. its plastic and sometimes called a baby syringe. no needles come with it. illegal here to get it with needles. and we use the e 6000 also, it works great even on large stones. swaroskis are the best stones.

I reckon it depends on what you are most comfortable with. I know a few moms at our rink sew the crystals on, but overwhemingly everyone glues the crystals on with E6000. I don't know if that stuff is available over in England but it holds very well. I use a system where I have a syringe that I put several drops on the dress then use a wax stick to pick up the crystals and put them on the glue. I have gotten pretty darn fast with this method. I don't like working with the hot method because I'm worried about getting burnt. I could probably do the sew on thing but haven't bought any yet. It would be nice to easily reuse the crystals.

Drycleaning will get the stones off a dress that has used E6000. (see my post above.)

I squeeze about an inch of glue into the syringe, depending on how much I need to do. I will have to try the dry cleaning method... I'll have to figure out what the "old method" of dry cleaning is.

Wow, that's interesting. I've never heard of that before. I wonder if most cleaners even know what the "old fashioned" dry cleaning solution is? I use E6000 which works well. Thanx for the info.

You won't find many "voting" for my techniques. I use the Old fashion method of needle and thread. I found it's harder to get a hold of the swaroski margarites the mom's used on my dresses when I was a kid, but swaroski still sells sew on flat backs and I like those a lot.
But I think I'm the only one left that still sews on my stones. Have fun no matter what you do! |

yes you are a dinosaur when it comes to sewing them on lol. some do it for certain things but mostly glue now. still the pointed backs have the best glitter of them all.

Thanks for all the feedback! I have a feeling Im going to have to order this E6000 off the net as Im pretty sure we dont sell it here but it sounds awesome! Angoraknitter dont worry your not completely out of date as most of mine were sewn on this year! I think they are fab and awesome for the reuse factor, but you just have to have so many in the first place to be able to decorate more than 1 dress at a time. I think Ill look into this E6000 thing as it seems to be what everyones using. Im pretty sure no-one glues them on without hotfix here. Thanks for all the help people! x

E6000 is also available on ebay. Also some ebay sellers have kits to use for gluing on stones... that is where I got the syringe idea from. Good luck.

Sorry to reopen an old thread, but Ive decided Im definitely going with the non-hotfix stones approach.
Can any of you list any suppliers that you buy from. Im going to keep checking ebay, but are there any other companies you directly buy from as there arent too many suppliers here in the UK or they overcharge you alot x |
