Hi All, Tuesday, Dawn, Brikkee, ChuckBest, Sk8rmom, , , ,
NaNaDo, Maryland-Bob, This is an old and a current Organ Music Session skating song provided to us in a tread up in the Main forum started by Kathie on PA Skating. Quote:
Anyone know what the songs are??? Brikkee ask your dad unless you know NaNaDO ask some of those Organ guys. Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave |

Hi Sonrisa,
Thanks, If you heard Joy to the World then they must have copied some of the bars of their Great song from an older song. 3 Dog Night hadn't even started playing when this song was played in rinks. Later, Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave |

Hi All,
During WW=II Mitzy Gaynor was quite popular as a GI pin up sweet heart gal. My father in law of 1925 and WW-II remembers her well. I seem to remember that she had a 1 million dollar insurance policy on her legs. Today it would be 1 Billion. Part of this Organ tune might be from South Pacific with the following words "And I can't get you out of my skin" Here is a link past her girlish figure and style of the 50's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8RwPfzF6Oo And another link to her seductive past that drove a guy wild. Wow Dennis was great and could have been a skater... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8rCvV3xH7c I mean South Pacific is close yet there might be another tune that this organ music is based upon. Nope Dave, that IS "Joy to the World", starting 4:11 into the You Tube clip, he transitions to "Kind of a Hush" around 7:10 and finishes with it. I still can't quite remember the first tune, it will come to me, or, I'll ask Corey ![]() Bob |

Ralph Brown was at the organ Sunday, but his first tune sounded like the one Corey is doing in the clip. Ralph said it was called "Point of No Return". (Ralph and NaNaDo's pictures are up on the Pensylvaina Rinks thread)

Hi Bob (retread), CA-Sonrisa,
This is s kind of a music ear puzzle for me. I keep on hearing parts of words or songs. Quote:
One of Expose's playings is at: http://youtube.com/watch?v=dWz5qHVQQOc None of the songs seemed, to my ears, to match. I still have to try Sonrisa's suggestion which I think is the same as "Jeremiah had a bull frog" which someone else gave me. It would be helpful to know what artist and maybe what year. ============ ALSO, since Ralph is a little older ask him what was the popular mixes to play on the top in the mid to late 1960's? Who knows maybe it was variable per organ player. When I first heard this from NaNaDo I thought for sure it was the one I skated to in the 60's. Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave |

Hi Bob aka retread,
It will be fun to hear and know the same skating music I skated on and in the mid 1960s. T'was a long time ago yet it seems just like yesterday. |

OK, I just got back from Sportsmans (blissfully exhausted and nursing a blown out knee). Corey played tonight! He opened with that set after I asked him about the Youtube music. The songs in that video are indeed Point of No Return, Joy to the World, and Kind of a Hush. A light crowd tonight, I hope the rink carries on with the Sunday night organ sessions.

I went to the live organ session tonight at Fantasy. Dang I just don't get it, I recognized Chatanooga Choo-choo and that's about it. One song he started I thought was Manheim Steamroller, lol. They all sound alike to me, too loud & weird with the click track running. I had my ipod in my pocket but I couldn't stoop to that level of rudeness & use it while he was there playing for everyone. I did enjoy a fairly open floor to skate though, worked my tail off and left with bloody feet & sore knees, always a good night when you have to crawl to your car

Well Amy, music is a very objective and personal thing I suspect we have a pretty good age differance (I'm just about 50) and we started skating in an entirely different era. I imagine you saw groups shuffling in step, thats what the "click track" allows, it was the original shuffle skating beat. I stayed in the rinks as organ music faded and Disco emerged, but I had to call it quits when Rap became "skating music". At any rate, if you do another organ session, fall in behind a line of shufflers and give it a try! Glad it was a "good night", and by being there, you helped to support one of the organists I hold so dear!

Bob asked me about this medley last night before I started playing -- YES, I am now a member of the forum!!! I don't play with a preset SET list. I play whatever inspires me and the skaters at the time. In fact, I think most of us do the same thing. Bob, you got it right... 1) Point of No Return (Elvis Costello), 2) Joy to the World (3 Dog Night) and 3) Kind Of Hush (Peter Noone).
The video started off as sort-of a joke to some local friends at the rink (Rollermotion) . Turns out...it seems to have turned into big thing! I thank EVERYONE for that. It's all of you skaters that make US (the organists) who we are. Looks like I will have to do more. I'll talk to Ralph and see whether or not we should get him on video too .

At the risk of dating myself, I thought "Point of No Return" sounded familiar. Actually, Elvis Costello's cover version is predated by Georgie Fame's original in the 60's...
