Tony, I should know this, but I have to admit I am not certain... were you a competitive speed skater yourself?

Yes I Was A Sp[eed Skater.
I Started Skating Session In 1948 (age 10) At Seferinos Rollerdrome And Back The They Had Top Speed Skaters. It Was A Huge Rink With A 12 Lap To The Mile Track And They Had Races Durning The Session And The Racers Wore Their Uniforms Back There Were No Invitational Meets In Our Area, There Was Just State - Regional - Nationals State Meet Was About A Week Long In April. They Had Art And Speed Mixed. Few Hours Of Speed Then Art Then Speed Then Art My Parents Would Never Let Me Take Off Of School For A Week. I Was Never A Long Distance Racer. So I Was Only A Average Racer As I Got Older Someone Had To Be In Charge So I Took That Job Which Made Me The Coach Even Though I Was Still Trying To Race. Part Of My Problem Seemed To Be My Heart I've Had A Pacemaker Since 1986. We've Been Having Get Togethers Of Our Old Teams From The 70s And They Been Fun. Was At Castle Loveland, Ohio Last Time. |

I Just Sent Kathie A Picture Of Our Team From 1968
Tri- Skateland Fairfield, Ohio. Last Year I Tried To Race Was 1969. My Best Years Would've Been In The Younger Divisions. Sprints I Liked. |

Tony thanks again. I love the picture with Peppy, Larry and Mike. I can remember many nights washing my hair about 3 times before it felt clean after being in the rink all day at a speed meet.

I wish, in all my years, I never took a camera to a meet when I was competing. The only skating pic I have is from an Art meet when my partner and I placed in Dance and her mom insisted we get a picture. You can barely see me I am soooooo skinny.

Yeah I knew Greg really well. I'm surprised that you (Tony) don't remember John Pennington.
Actually Pammy Jo knew him longer than I did. btw, Greg died last year from a massive heart attack, I say massive because he was in great shape and still skating. He was like Timmy Small and Pat Bergen, had the very best speed skating form, I am very sad about the loss of Greg. He hung around with myself and Steve Ogden, who was also a great skater. I remember Steve leading the Senior open at Nationals and having one of his Huggers come unseated from the hub and wedged itself against the truck and they couldn't get it loose fast enough to get him back in the race, boy was he pi$$ed. I wish I could get in touch with him, we lost contact when everybody was switching to cell phones.

Tremor:
The Last Time I Saw Greg Was At A 3 Day Meet In Florida. He Raced Indoors Only. Think He Had Two Sons And To Enter All 3days The Cost Was Justtoo Damn High. I Went Down With Marcia Yager And We Stayed At Tim Smalls Then Drove Up To The Outdoor Races. One Day On A Road By The New York Mets Spring Training Facility - The Next Day On A High School Quarter Mile Track. Tim And Marcia At The Time Were Top Master Racers And Hall Of Famers I Wonder How Many Hall Of Famers Are Racing Today. |

Greg did race the A2A, at least once that I know of. He's on the books, I looked it up after he died.
